main Staff page biography Herman Rapaport is a critical theorist who specializes in comparative literary and cultural studies. He was born in the Netherlands and emigrated with his parents to the United States in the 1950s. In 1997-98 he was a Fellow at the Society for Humanities at Cornell University. Following his term at Cornell, he received a fellowship in 1998 to participate in a National Endowment of the Humanities Institute that focused on theories of the self from the perspectives of cognitive psychology and analytical philosophy. During that time, Professor Rapaport also wrote The Theory Mess, published with Columbia University Press.
