. main Staff page biography Herman Rapaport is a critical theorist who specializes in comparative literary and cultural studies. He was born in the Netherlands and emigrated with his parents to the United States in the 1950s. In 1997-98 he was a Fellow at the Society for Humanities at Cornell University. Following his term at Cornell, he received a fellowship in 1998 to participate in a National Endowment of the Humanities Institute that focused on theories of the self from the perspectives of cognitive psychology and analytical philosophy. |

Shapiro is the national Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, the nation's oldest and largest civil liberties organization. As Legal Director, he directly oversees a staff of nearly 50 lawyers that are involved in hundreds of civil liberties cases throughout the country. Among other duties, Shapiro supervises the extensive litigation activities of the ACLU before the United States Supreme Court. The ACLU routinely participates in more Supreme Court cases each year than any other private organization. Shapiro is also an adjunct professor of constitutional law at both Columbia and Brooklyn Law Schools, specializing in free speech issues. |
