OVERVIEW In this lesson students are confronted with the discrepant event of the Republican victory in Texas in the presidential election of 1952. After learning that Texas had gone Republican only once before (in the election of 1928), students are presented with a series of factors that may or may not help to explain the discrepant event. Ask students to make a generalization about which political party appeared to be stronger in Texas based upon the results of the presidential elections 1932- 1948. The students will quickly see that the Democratic party dominated the Republican party by a huge margin. You may wish to comment on how huge a victory percentage of 80 percent really is. |
