It's an industry recognised qualification that teaches you a variety of draughting skills including establishing a design brief, presenting preliminary designs, developing building concepts and preparing working drawings to a standard for building consent approval. You can also pick up background skills and knowledge relating to all types of construction, building services, materials and environment, building law and contract. Programme structure 246 credits from unit standards.
Students produce a professional set of construction drawings of a residential structure. Principles of interpreting light commercial construction drawings (blueprints) for structural and trade information are also introduced. 90 Contact Hours ATE 122 CONSTRUCTION PRACTICES AND DOCUMENTS (2) This course is a cursory investigation of construction practices, specifications, contracts and other legal documents used in the building construction industry. The roles and responsibilities of design and construction team participants are also explored. Students produce a portfolio of construction drawings of a multistory skeleton structure.
Architecture FOCUS The built environment contributes significantly to the greenhouse effect and the release of pollutants. How do we design, build and control buildings to meet the needs of users more fully. This specialist area of research considers the environment in and around buildings, developing reliable methods of predicting building performance and energy use, describing built form, and estimating both construction and lifecycle costs. This is now an integral extension of the design process, and a logical and valuable spin-off from 3-D computer modelling. A graphical simulation, produced and animated in three dimensions, can be linked to environmental and cost information.
