In fact, in some ways Della's loss may be even more tragic because it does not come through some spectacular act of God. Della's loss of family comes in a mundane fashion that could occur to anyone. Add to this the extensive love Jackie received from her parents while they were alive and it becomes apparent that Della's tragedy may be greater, as her family chooses not to return her love in the expected way. One advantage Jackie has over Della is that through the good and bad experiences she faces Dillon and Rachel shower her with unconditional love. Della never receives this unconditional affirmation from her family. |
