With the help of his wife Dee, Biff, Merritt and Jon McKibben, Wink warmed up with a pass of 171. 104 on the Bonneville salt setting a new record of 178. Engineering 100-inch engine put into the bike built by Wink and his crew at Newport Roadsters. With off-the-shelf cylinder heads supplied by Edelbrock, Moosetracks competed in the 1650cc A-Partial Streamline Pushrod Fuel class. Wink and crew posted the fastest run all week in this class.
It was a personal best, and far better than anybody else could produce. Second-best was Ron Fringer, who headed the strong Canadian contingent with a run at 7. Dale Nungesser, the Kansas bike builder who currently leads the AHDRA's Top Fuel point standings, was third on his FastCat bike with a time of 7. Local favorite Steve Huff, sporting his new Znetix-sponsored Pro Drag bike, qualified sixth-quickest. Huff is also sponsored by Downtown Harley-Davidson, and had a large collection of well-wishers on hand.
In the Amateur Big Twin class John Kownacki riding a 106 c. Dyna Convertible turned the lowest ET for the class of 7. The fastest time in the Big Twin Pro class would also be set in the first round by Randy Snyder on his Illusion Team bike with an ET of 7. However, a couple of red lights would eliminate Watkins and Snyder leaving a final round of Earl Burley and Tod Couch. In the final showdown of the night, the Lightening FLASH Race, pitting the fastest Sportster and Big Twin, Doug Morrow got the win with an ET of 7.
A record field of 265 race teams teched-in at the facility, including 29 Top Fuel bikes, 10 Pro Fuel riders, 17 Pro Dragster riders and 11 Pro Gas teams. This competitive Venerable Ray Price - who was winning motorcycle drag races before some of this weekend's competitors were born - didn't make the JIMS Top Fuel field. The North Carolina rider was 19th-quickest in Saturday qualifying; three notches out of Sunday's 16-bike field. Saturday, 11 riders got in the 6-second range, and nine broke the magic 200-mph barrier. Augustine was able to wrap up the Pro Dragster national riding championship when defending No.
