Ayden is from a subspecies of Bajoran that were, according to myth, seperated from the Bajoran culture for worshiping of the Pa-Wraiths. Their sect of the Bajoran religion was taken to the planet Aljor by the Prophets. Furthermore, the Prophets indelibly changed the physical appearance of the Pa-Wraiths' followers, hence the eyes and skin. Other than that, Aljorans and Bajorans are identical to each other.

When Ayden's homeworld of Aljor was annexed by the Dominion, his parents fled to Bajor. Unfortunately, their welcome on Bajor was less than warm, especially by those who knew their Bajoran mythos. Despite this, when the Cardassians invaded, his parents fought against the occupation. His father died in a skirmish with a Cardassian patrol, two year old Ayden and his mother alone.

They lived on Bajor in relative peace, they suffered little at the hands of Bajorans and even less at the hands of Cardassians. On his twelfth birthday, however, Ayden's mother was murdered by a Cardassian patrol who accused her of being a terrorist. Ayden was brought into a Cardassian labor camp, in the far reaches of Cardassian space.

He was defiant and many times was nearly beaten or worked to death for "insubordination". He lived in constant fear of punishment, only finding release in dismantling the occasional piece of Cardassian technology dropped. Quite quickly, he became adept at repairing things. Seeing this the Cardassians, despite his previous counts of rebelious behaviour, decided to educate him. They tought him advanced sciences, mathematics, and egineering principles beyond just the quantitative practicalities he knew.

Over the next four years, in secret, a device that looked like ,and had the fuctionality of a comm unit, was built by Ayden. He hid the true purpose of the device from the Cardassians, and waited for the right moment to use it. It had a small harmonic amplifier which, when the proper settings were imbued, would match the first harmonic frequency of any solid object it was pointed at. Then it emitted a high frequency noise five harmonics above, and it would utterly obliterate whatever object. The idea was to use it on his Cardassian captives. And its moment soon arrived. Just a few days after finishing this device, a riot broke out at the labor camp. He took the device, and with the aid of others, escaped. Despite his hatred for Cardassians, he did not use the device on them. The escapees made their way to a near by Cardassian ship shard. One of the Bajoran's took the device from Ayden, and they proceded to hijack a ship.
