John Owen
I retired early from my professional post as Assistant Head of a large
Comprehensive School and have been able to devote the necessary time to being
your County Councillor for the past four years.
I have been married to Jill (Borough Councillor) for thirty years and
have one son Andrew, who is a Doctor in the NHS.
I am widely experienced as a Councillor having been first elected to
the Nottingham City Council in 1976.
After moving to Nuthall I was elected to Broxtowe Borough Council
serving as the representative for Nuthall for 16 years and holding a variety of
senior posts including Deputy Leader of the Council. Four years ago I was elected to serve as the
County Councillor for the newly created Nuthall (Watnall, Strelley and Nuthall)
Division. My additional responsibilities
as a County Councillor is to serve as a member of the Nottinghamshire Fire
Authority and also to recruit Governors to fill the Local Authority places on
School Governing Bodies.
I currently serve as a member of the Larkfield Infant School Governing
Body having previously been a founder Governor of the Mornington Primary
School.
In addition to my Council work which occupies much of my time I act as
a Chief Examiner for ‘A’ Level Biology and for IGSCE Human Biology. I find this work particularly helpful in
keeping abreast of developments in education which is one of the main areas of
responsibility for the County Council.
I am a member of the Nuthall Methodist Church and also a member of the
Nuthall and District Local History Society.
