The Scots literature available on the Web at the moment is fairly restricted. One of the aims of Scots on the Wab is to make such material more accessible and include examples of modern Scots writing.
- An archive of Scots materials is being developed by Glasgow University's COMET programmme.
This includes some some plays and poetry in Scots.
- Not surprisingly, there is lots of Burns poetry on the Internet. The Johnnie Walker Burns 200 site is attractive, although the stereotype 'Jock in a kilt' imagery is inappropriate, to say the least. For more serious browsers, Bath University has a comprehensive gopher list of Burns poetry and In the University of Toronto's library you'll find all the Burns favourites.
The Poetry of Robert Burns contains audio files of To a Mouse, Willie Wastle, A Man's A Man For A' That. Robert Burns, poet (1759-96) has a fair number of poems and a good glossary.
- Toronto also holds material by Sir Walter Scott.
- The only thing I can find by R L Stevenson is Kidnapped which is actually a pretty good read, and has some Scots dialogue. I've also put up RLS's Thrawn Janet which is regarded as one of the finest short stories in Scots.
- But nothing from MacDiarmid or any of the modern Scots writers. There are, of course, copyright issues.
- ...but watch this space...
