| Science needs Macho men As a teenager/young man growing up in the 70's and 80's in the UK, I noted with interest how Conservative (Right wing) politicians had a bullish manner about them and how they were casually dismissive of Labour (Left wing) politicians intelligent sounding arguments. Leaving aside my own (small 'L') liberal political views this was something I noted objectively as I could. But what struck me as interesting was the same phenomenon appearing when scientists were up against against a 'paranormalist'.They had the same bullishness and dismissive manner. Bearing in mind the thrust of these articles on Science this bullish behaviour displayed by politicians and those scientists is essentally what it looks like, and that's bullying. But bullying that has the official stamp of approval and which is part of the fabric of the organisation.These men have risen in the ranks of the establishment not just because they are good scientists but also because they know, just like in Politics, there is a party line and they realise that if they follow it, it will help them advance their career. The true scientific nature is idiosyncratically curious, it accepts no 'logical' boundaries it just goes where it will. And most scientists have that in their soul. But you can't run the Science business with that kind of chaotic exploration, so it has to be hammered out of them and then channelled into more Scientifically acceptable areas.This is why Science needs macho men, it's got to keep all it's party members in line. But of course this is absolute rubbish! |
