Sephiroth was a top-ranking SOLDIER officer. No other person ever could matchi him in power or skill, and he was looked up to by many. In one mission, Sephiroth discovers a secret about his past. He knew that his mother, Jenova, died while giving birth to him. However, when he got to the site of the mission, Nibelheim, he discovers a chamber marked "Jenova." Inside is a freaky looking thing that sort of resembles a human. As well as the chamber, there are several capsels with monsters inside of the. Shinra had been creating monsters. Sephiroth jumps to the conclusion that his mother was Jenova, and he was created much the same way as the monsters. He begins to think he was a Shinra experiment. He then spends several days in an old library at in the basement of a house in Nibelheim. When he comes out, he is pertty much psycho. He burns the town, kills almost everyone, then goes to join his "mother," Jenova. Sephiroth ends up dying in a battle against Cloud (or so the gamer is lead to believe). However, his will continues on.
However, the truth is that a Shinra scientist named Hojo and another scientist, Lucrecia, were his parents. Hojo injected cells from Jenova into Lucrecia while she was pregnant, which is why Sephiroth was so powerful. It is also the reason why he does not fully die. Hojo also did a lot of experimenting with other people and Jenova cells. He created several Sephiroth "clones" in the hopes that his theory of the Reunion would prove to be true. He believed that if Jenova's cells were scattered, they would eventually reunite, even if said cells were inside beings that were once human.
So basically, Sephiroth dies, his will lives and causes many problems for the game's good guys, and his will has to be killed along with the rest of him. The end.
