Lesson 2: Wizard Duelling

Well, I bet you have all been looking forward to this lesson haven't you?
(*looks at students in disbelief when they shake their heads and say "No, Prof Swish!", he finds out later that it was Travy Boy and Edgar Torne' who told everyone to say this, so they get Detention for a year...... :p as if I'd do that *looks that them darkly*)  anyway.... back to it.......

Duelling is one of the most dangerous wizarding "sports" in the world. Duels can be organised, like competions, which are the safest, or brought up by a fight between two wizards, in which case they can be dangerous (We all remember the Legend of the Quintaped now don't we?)

Once a year, a huge Duelling Tournament takes place in the Emerald Arena on Atlantis. One dueller from each country is chosen to compete .
Here is a list of winners since 1901:

This unit shall teach you how to do basic duels. These duels are not necessarily dangerous because they are organised.
Here are some basic things to remember:
* Always have a second. they are there to keep duelling if you get killed, which won't happen at all, or get injured and need medical attention or if you have had a hex placed on you that stops you from handling a wand (say you are transfigured into a bird), or saying an incantation, meaning you can no longer duel.
* You must NEVER use dangerous Dark Magic.
* Bow to youe opponent before the duel commences. (see picture below)
The two Japanese Business Wizards are showing how to bow to one another  before a duel commences.

* Make sure you're well rested before the duel, as they can go on for a long time. the longest duel ever know went for a duration of 2 months, 12 days and 5 hours. This was without a second coming into play.

Longest Wizarding Duel
In 1995 the longest known wizard duel took place, Fredrick Von Hossenhimer and Bran McGibber hexed it out for 2 months, 12 days and 5 hours. They each cast a boringly slow 1 hex per person per hour, they slept for 1 hour each day (12 am - 1 am) and were so tired that by the end they were lying down casting spells, and rolling around trying to dodge the spells. Meanwhile, the seconds had a large collection of books brought from the nearby Mr. Casters Bookshop to read, they probably know about a million new spells now, food was brought out every 3 hours as well as drinks, there were no toilet breaks, so we here at Latterpole don't even want to think about how they went, though some of the spectators say they saw a 50% increase in the size of their waistes due to what one said was "Looked like those gosh darny duellers bladders were growin' it did!", while another commented : "*yawn* Me and my son came to watch this, thinking it would be *yawn*  interesting, all we saw were too guys lying down busting to go to the toilets! *yawn*"

* Remember the Disarming Charm (Expelliarmus) and the Incantation Stopper Spell (Finite Incantation) and the Un-Transfigure Spell (Undofors)

Duelling  is the most interesting wizarding art. It allows wizards to tests themselves and prove how skilled they are. It requires concentration, determination, self-confidence, quick thinking, agility, correct pronunciation and practice; eye contact is also a very important factor.
Duelling was used in the past to defend honor and only most despicable  wizards will fail to attend one if challenged. Duelling shows bravery and courage. Some of the most distinguished duellers were 2 of our great founders: Salazar Slytherin and Gordic Gryffindor.
Duelling goes back as far as wands and hexes where invented, no one knows the exact date of the 1st duel but, The Society of Magical Spell Historian have reasons to believe that It dates from 200, 000 B.C., right about when hexes were discovered. Historians also believe that the first big wizard duel was between witches Wanda Goodfeather and Fleece Bluestone. The duel´s reason remains an unconfirmed. The most common duelling spell is expelliarmus which would make your opponents wand fly throw the air and land on your hands. Almost any spell can be used in duelling but transfiguration and elemental spells along with unforgivable curses have shown to be very useful in duelling.

HOMEWORK:

Read the following books:
   - Dueling - A Spell-ing Lesson by Artmius Viridan
   - Duelling For Beginners by Kiara Bell
   - Spells and Duels by The Slytherins

Assignment:

Research either a famous duel or one that occured at a family function.
Give a full recap of the duel, include details of:
    * How many minutes/hours etc the duel took.
    * The competitors and their names
    * Spells cast by each person and details of the spells (incantations, effect etc)
    * Strange wand movements used by duellers (eg.. if the duel took place while they were intoxicated, the wand might have just been woven around like a Muggle would do)
    * Any rules that were broken (dark/unallowed spells used, 2 against 1 etc)
    * Any strange things that happened/any spells that were cast incorrectly and what effect happened instead of the desired one.
    * When and where it took place
    * Other little details.
e.g. Did they keep eye contact with each other?
              Cheating?
              Dodging?
              Stance?

This is all the Homework for this piece, as the actual duelling will take up the greater part of the marks.
