• Monkey = the “restless instability of genius”. Opposite of Daoist
“Quietism” (see p 21) but wants IMMORTALITY and
ENLIGHTENMENT (Daoist and Buddhist goals conflate).
• claims to be King, Sage, Equal of Heaven after meeting Daoist
Master and learning magic; can change shape, multiply, travel on
clouds.
• travels into Hell to compel the King of Hell to give him and all
Monkeys Immortality!!!!!!!
