IKE SKELTON
(Former Missouri Partisan turns into Poodle for Politically-Correct)
From the October 6th,2007 edition of the Missouri Bushwhacker Blog-
U.S. Rep. Ike Skelton ( D)- Missouri is the latest to jump on "Freedom's Frontier" Fraud...
In Rep. Skelton's weekly column dated September 9th, 2007 and entitled, "History Matters!" Rep. Skelton writes...
"My friend, the late Congressman Fred Schwengel, told me about meeting then-Senator Harry S Truman in 1935. Schwengel was a college student in Missouri at the time and recalled Truman advising him that to be a good American, "...you should know your history."
Unfortunately, studies have shown that Americans of all ages have a dangerously poor understanding of American history and culture. Educators are concerned that neither high school nor college graduates have an adequate grasp on American history nor a satisfactory knowledge of our system of government.
In an age when we are focused on the country’s security alert status, why does history matter? While we will never forget that the terrorist attacks of 9/11 were a direct attack on American lives, the attacks were also an attempt to undermine American values. Our homeland security efforts have properly focused on the physical protection of people, but we must not fail to protect our democratic ideals and the principles of freedom on which our nation was founded.
One way we can preserve our heritage for future generations is by improving our familiarity with American history. Through a project entitled “History Matters!”, I have promoted history and civic education in Missouri’s Fourth congressional District through a variety of methods, some of which include:
However you access history—through the information on my website, a trip to a museum or by reading a book from the library—share what you learn! Without a common civic memory and a common understanding of the remarkable individuals, events and ideals that have shaped the nation, we risk losing much of what it means to be an American citizen.
When students of all ages learn about American history and their government, they become better citizens. The strength of America's democracy comes from the informed, active participation of its citizens, whether voting in an election, participating on a jury, volunteering for community service or simply being aware of current affairs. We must do all we can to ensure that the next generation of citizens have the knowledge, skills, and interest to fulfill their civic responsibilities."
Perhaps Representative Skelton should have researched President Truman a little more before jumping on the "Freedom's Frontier" bandwagon.
If he had followed Truman's advice then he would know that the "Freedom's Frontier" program is going to create many bad Americans, who won't know the true history of the War of Northern Aggression, specifically the Border War between Missouri and Kansas.
According to the Presidential Avenue.Com website...
"Born on May 8, 1884, in rural Lamar, Missouri, Harry S. Truman grew up in nearby Independence. His family had moved to this small town of just 6,000 people in 1890, when he was an infant. Located ten miles east of Kansas City, Independence was both southern and western. It was geographically a western town where wagon trains had passed on their way to the Overland trail yet the place felt "southern...
Furthermore, the Confederate statue in the town's cemetery reigned as the biggest memorial in town. Bands in the park began and ended concerts with "Dixie," and the Daughters of the Confederacy served picnic lunches at reunions for Quantrill's boys, those border-war veterans (now old men in the 1890s) who had fought as Confederate guerrilla raiders during the Civil War. Old Frank James, the brother of Jessie James, occasionally showed up at such events. "
President Truman was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and once stated that...
"But Quantrill and his men were no more bandits than the men on the other side. I've been to reunions of Quantrill's men two or three times. All they were trying to do was protect the property on the Missouri side of the line."
This is something that would certainly be worth "noting" in the story of the "Freedom's Frontier" but apparently Ike Skelton conveniently felt no need to mention this when he spoke at the Wentworth Military Academy at Lexington , Missouri, August 9th, 2007.
The official minutes of the meeting note that Judy Billings (from where else, Lawrence, Kansas) opened the meeting.
Rep. Skelton was later introduced by John Dillingham who stated...
"Con. Skelton has had many titles historian, prosecutor, Phi Beta Kappa, Senator, Mr. Chairman and Congressman for Missouri's 4th District since 1977"
When the introduction was complete Skelton joked that...
"that it is a miracle that both Missourians and Kansans are peacefully in the same room, at least so far"
There were many disturbing items listed in the minutes as I read through them. One was the mention of a National Geographic Center for "Sustainable" Destinations. I began to wonder what this term meant, so I visited the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations website.
The website defines "Geotourism" as...
"Geotourism is defined as tourism that sustains or enhances the geographical character of a place—its environment, culture, aesthetics, heritage, and the well-being of its residents."
So now international organizations are going to decide what is best for the "well being" of Missouri citizens?
Yes, you did not misread me, I said INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS !
The website has a downloadable charter that describes itself as a GLOBABL TEMPLATE . The "charter" states that...
"This global template is designed for nations but can also be adjusted for signature by province , states and smaller jurisdictions , and for endorsement by international organizations"
The charter also contains provisions that deal with such subjects as:
Why is this important? Because in the August 9th, 2007 meeting at Lexington, Missouri ...
"Also noted was the need for all property owners that want to have their property in FFNHA must sign an opt in / opt out letter"
The minutes stated that they want to protect private property rights, but revealed that they have had one incident that has stirred up a "hornets nest".
The important thing to remember is that this massive amount of land that has been included in Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area will be tied to "international organizations"
Does Missouri really need international organizations telling us how to "interpret" our historic sites? Why do all of the Freedom's Frontier National Heritage Area meetings seem to be occuring in Missouri?
What will this mean for property owners that find their land falls within the "Freedom's Frontier"?
The National Geographic Society Geotourism Commitment has recently been recognized by the Clinton Global Iniative.
These organizations proclaim to be "non-governmental" yet have been influential in getting globalist legislative agendas passed.
Rep. Ike Skelton quoted Harry Truman in his September 9th column. At the August 9th Freedom's Frontier meeting in Lexington, Missouri John Dillingham even described Skelton as a "historian".
The Presidential Avenue.Com article that I cited earlier in this article contains a humerous story about another "historian" that attempted to interview Truman...
"Most who remember Truman in those days remember a cranky old man who loved to shock people-telling one young history professor that he had better go home and read his books before trying to interview him again"
One of the suggestions in the August 9th, 2007 Freedom's Frontier Meeting in Lexington, Missouri was implement a marketing "hook" for Freedom's Frontier. One in which there was no "right or wrong".
I recently received an email from one concerned Missourian who wrote...
"You know there is nothing stopping Missourians from having their own project. But as you can see the interest here is about creating a “unified” story, developing talking points, and making money on it while keeping the power in Kansas. Remember Skelton is using the same sort of “political processes” seen in Congress to come up with a “compromise” view of history and exploit it. It is typical of a politician, especially one in the twilight of his career. He represents the view of a lot of SCV members that are content with any sort of official recognition regardless how patronizing. The FF people are bureaucrats with an agenda and administrative skills. Their movement arose in the perfect venue of relativism and eastern Kansas money. It is a behind-the-scenes organization with roots deep in the Kansas mentality steeped in New England values and social paternalism which will try to convince Missourians is the same as Missouri’s values…finding common ground in appealing to middle-of-the-road “Midwest sensibilities” that are “value neutral” and “non-confrontational”. Blunt will use this in his resume for his Senatorial bid to show the world that he will dutifully carry out the agenda of concession. This is a very sophisticated effort and well thought out. I see NPS guidelines all over it. But at the end of the day the show will be run out of Lawrence and Washington, DC."
And "international organizations"
