Hapkido is a Korean martial art that integrates certain aspects of the Japanese martial arts forms of Judo, Karate, and Aikido.

The word "Hapkido" is comprised of the terms "Hap," which means "together," "Ki" which is the Asian concept of "spirit energy," and the term "Do," which means "the way."

Hapkido employs grappling holds, joint-locks, throws and counter-strikes, usually with the hands, to defend against an attacker. It is a very "fluid" martial art whereby the practitioner attempts to "read" the movements of his opponent, and to redirect and amplify his opponent's energy against him.

Students also receive training in "real-world" self-defense scenarios and techniques, including weapon disarming techniques. With increasing concerns regarding personal safety and security, Hapkido provides not only a rewarding physical fitness program, but also a very practical way of ensuring one's personal safety.
