[The scene opens once again to the inside of Simple Simon Terry's old tour bus. The same old smelly red velvet seats, same dark blue carpet. Simon sits in one of the captain chairs towards the front of the bus and on the semi-sofa is Wolfgang Griffin. Both basically wearing bluejeans and black t-shirts, they both seem to be setting in for the long ride from Little Rock to Memphis. Simon pulls off his yellow sunglasses and begins wiping them with his shirt.]
Simon: I can't believe that you've never been to Memphis before. I can't wait to show you some of the sites. There's Graceland, The Pink Palace, The Zoo, and most of all Beale Street. I'm getting nostalgic just thinking about it.
Wolfgang: Lots of greats wrestled at The Pyramid?
Simon: No, mostly just the new guys and some of that other federation did some stuff there. No, the Pyramid isn't a very old building. It was just built in the early 90's. Most of the classic Memphis wrestling took place at the Mid-South building. That was back when Tojo Yamamoto, Jerry Lawler, and Bill Dundee ruled the place.
Wolfgang: Now it's guys like you.
Simon: Well, I'm not running too much in NEW right now. I'm proud of my victory over Pete Hardy though. He was a very tough opponent. I am looking forward to stepping back into the ring with Mikey again. I feel like both of us have something to prove in this match and I think the fans will love seeing it happen again.
Wolfgang: But do you think guys like you and me will ever be considered the Jerry Lawlers and Bill Dundees of NEW.
Simon: Sure. Everyone contributes something to the fed. There's the Wicked Clown and Karr with their edgy stuff, there's SBK with all his flash and the excitement around him, and there's even the Dennis Mann's with the love to hate image going on. It's a going to be a long ride. Let me tell you about one of my first wrestling events to attend when I was a child. It was in Memphis.... I think I was like 9 or 10 years old. There was a battle royal and the winner was a man named Soultrain Jones. You know who that was?
Wolfgang: No clue.
Simon: He ended up being Virgil, you know Million Dollar Man's flunkie. But anyway, the main even that night was awesome. There were three newcomers making their debut that night and they were the main event. The first newcomer was to be Jerry Lawlers partner. He was the eighteen year old, 175 pound son of the promoter and his name was Jeff Jarrett. It was long before the Double J stuff. He and Lawler won that match. But the funny part about it was not only how huge Jeff Jarrett became, but how huge their opponents for that night became. Their opponents were a new tag team that went by the name the Freedom Fighters, Sting and Rock. The Freedom Fighters changed their names the very next week to The Blade Runners and not much later made their seperate ways. Well, everyone knows what happened to Sting. He went on to WCW to become a legend. But Blade Runner Rock also made a huge success. After wrestling a year or so as Blade Runner Rock he changed his name to the Dingo Warrior.
Wolfgang: The Ultimate Warrior. I've always heard that he and Sting started out as partners.
Simon: And it all happened right there in Memphis.
Wolfgang: I've never seen anybody so passionate about returning home. I almost wonder how and why you ever decided to leave.
Simon: Actually the home that I grew up in was in Tupelo, Mississippi. It's a little over an hour south of Memphis, but I spent alot of childhood weekends in Memphis. As soon as I turned eighteen, I packed my stuff and moved there. I got to work with alot of my idols there before I moved to Mexico. One day, maybe Memphis will have a new hometown federation and I'll have the chance to move back again.
Wolfgang: And leave NEW?
Simon: Not anytime soon. I really don't think anythings going to come along anytime soon anyway. I love wrestling in NEW. I've got friends here, and I get to do alot of travelling. I just mean maybe sometime down the road, when I'm ready to settle a little bit.
Wolfgang: Ever thought about putting some money into your own federation?
Simon: Definately not right now. Look at the success rate of wrestling federations. I mean, I even heard mention that one of NEW's superstars was looking to open his own fed when he heard about the failing of Kasakstock and the death of Reaves. Everybody and their brother thinks they have what it takes to run a fed now days.
Wolfgang: But I believe you and "your brother" have what it takes to run a fed.
Simon: Ha ha!! No, I'm here for the longrun this time. Like I said, I enjoy NEW. Maybe one day they'll re-instate the Cruiserweight title and matches like mine and Mikey's this week will have even more meaning.
Wolfgang: You don't feel like your selling yourself short by striving for a mid-card spot.
Simon: I've been on top before. I've been the main event many of times in the past, but the promoters and fedheads control wrestling. The fans of the "mid-carders" have always been more passionate. That's what I like. If I make it back to the top of the card that would be great. And I am going to work hard to keep NEW fresh and alive, but as you know, we can't all be Grendels or Shawn Strykers, or Steve Grants in this business.
Wolfgang: That's where I want to be though. I want to be a world champion. I want to be the main event.
Simon: And I'm proud of you for that. Don't lose that strive, but if the world title or the main events don't come as often for you, don't walk away from it either.
[On that the bus begins to sputter a few times and regains itself. It's enough of a destraction that Wolfgang feels he needs to get a drink to make it all the way to Memphis in this thing.]
[Fade.]
