The S.I.G.M.A. Experiments
Storyline
The story first begins on the desert planet of Veldin, which happened to be home to a lombax (fuzzy canine-feline-humanoid alien) named Ratchet. Ratchet was quite the handy-man; he had even built his own ship! All he needed was a robotic ignition system and he could leave his backwater planet and explore the stars...
Meanwhile, at a Sentrybot production facility on the planet Quartu, a computer glitch had a most unanticipated effect. It caused the facility to produce one tiny robot (out of hundreds of metal behemoths) that had a conscience and a soul. As this defective robot began to acclimate himself to his surroundings, he found an Infobot which carried most greivous news. He quickly grabbed the Infobot and escaped the production facility just as the Sentrybots detected him as a stranger and a threat. Clank "borrowed" a conveniently placed spaceship and left Quartu as fast as he could. Unfortunately for him, two robots in starfighters had been sent to pursue and destroy him. Despite his best piloting skills, the little robot could not evade the enemy ships forever. He was shot down, oddly enough, over the planet Veldin.
Ratchet was out working on his ship when the little robot was shot down. Witnessing the site of the robot's ship crashing not too far off, Ratchet decided to go investigate. When he arrived at the crash site, he found the little robot, dormant in its retracted backpack mode. Figuring it might somehow come in handy, Ratchet took the robot back to his home.
Ratchet was once again working on his ship when the robot suddenly woke up. He told Ratchet that he was on a mission of dire importance, and showed Ratchet the Infobot he had taken from the production facility on Quartu. The Infobot showed a Blarg (yet another alien species) named Chairman Drek addressing the citizens of Novalis. The Blargian homeworld, Orxon, had become so polluted and toxic that the Blarg could no longer live there. As a result, they decided they would take the best chunks of planets across the galaxy and build themsleves a perfect new world, thus destroying those planets in the process.
The robot was convinced that a washed-up superhero called "Captain Quark" could somehow stop that injustice. He made a deal with Ratchet to provide the robotic ignition system the ship needed if Ratchet would help him find Quark. And so, the two set off.
While they were traveling, Ratchet, awestruck by the thrill of space travel, decided to get acquainted with his new partner by exchanging names. The robot had just begun to recite his complicated serial number when the space ship suddenly juked, causing the robot to hit his head on the fuselage with a loud "clank." Hence, Ratchet decided just to call him Clank. By now, unfortunately, Chairman Drek had gotten word of the little robot's escapade and had tracked down the brave automaton. While Ratchet and Clank were flying through space, Drek dispatched fighters to shoot them down. Ratchet and Clank ended up crash landing on none other than the planet Novalis, which was at that very moment under seige by the blarg. The heroes' quest was clear: they had to somehow stop the Blarg. And so, they set off on a massive adventure to save the galaxy!
