Jersey City is just across the river from Manhattan. A ferry can take you from shore to shore, which can be even more convenient than metro service closer to the city.

Jersey City is considered a "Clinical Center" where your student can fulfill almost all clinical rotations (and not have to move). They will only need to go to another hospital for the Psychiatry rotation, which can be arranged through the school. This hospital's cafeteria offers food coupons!

Get housing early! The good, safer places go fast in Jersey City.

This hospital is located in the inner-city, a somewhat dangerous area, and has, like New York, awful parking problems.

Here's a breakdown of Jersey City neighborhoods:

Downtown- mix of people, good housing, shopping and restaurant district, best high school in JC, PATH station trains to NYC

Journal Square- the heart of JC, high population of indians and egyptians-but a total mix of people, decent housing, bazaar shopping atmosphere, good grammar schools, PATH station for trains to NYC/Hoboken/Downtown JC

Greenville- this is the ghetto, high crime, dangerous place to live, some project buildings too

The Heights- everyone and everything here is Spanish, hispanic people, food, shopping, decent housing, close to ferry to NYC

Lincoln Park - area between Journal Square and Greenville, safe in most parts, clean neighborhood, mix of ppl but more asians here than any other part of JC, largest public park of JC is in this area

The PATH train will take you easily into Manhattan, Brooklyn, or safer parts of New Jersey with easy transfers to the subway system. I would find a better neighborhood to live and get used to the train time!
