Lions come from behind to defeat Roughies

(Jul 14) - JOSEPH LAVOIE- For the second straight week the B.C. Lions managed to come from behind and win. Last week the Lions came over-top the Ti-Cats 33-26 in an overtime thriller.

Last night it wasn't much different as Jon Baker kicked a 44-yard field goal with only 1:36 left in the fourth quarter to give the Lions a 30-28 win.

The Lions struggled to put points on the board early on thanks to penalties which killed their drives. This gave more opportunities for young  Roughriders quarterback Henry Burris to throw the ball and accumulate over 300 yards for the second week in a row.

But the Lions somehow managed to

come up with big plays at the right time.

Raphael Ball caught an interception and ran 54 yards to give the Lions a 7-0 lead early on. Mike Adams caught a beautiful throw from quarterback Damon Allen and ran for a 53-yard touchdown giving the Lions a 17-14 lead.

The Roughriders turned around and took a 28-27 lead with 2:45 remaining in the game when Paul McCallum finished an 84-yard drive with a 14-yard field goal.

Henry Burris didn't play horrible last night, he passed for two touchdowns and 325 yards and ran for Saskatchewans first touchdown. But he did have four interceptions and only completed 22 of 39 passes.

"He's still learning. We know that, and at the same time we know what we've got in him," said Roughriders coach Danny Barrett. "He's a tremendous quarterback and we're looking forward to him playing next week."

Although the Roughriders lost last night they proved that they are a much better team than last year.
