Lyman P. Lawton dies at age of 79

Lyman P. Lawton died Tuesday noon at the home of his daughter Mrs. Addie McClain, 421 North Street, Ludington.

Mr. Lawton was a resident of Scottville for eight years coming here from South Custer where he had lived on a farm since 1901. After moving here he followed the trade of carpentry and although 79 years of age, was very active up until a few months ago when he went to Ludington for the winter months and his health gradually failed. Mr. Lawton was born April 11, 1845 in St. Lawrence county New York. He was twice married. Miss Margaret Harris being his first wife. She was the mother of Mrs. Addie McClain of Ludington the only living child of that marriage.

In 1877 he married Miss Sarah Smith who preceded him in death May 11, 1924. The six living children born of this union are Mrs. Ethel Larr and Mrs. Maud Thompson of Custer, Mrs. Winnifred Standish and Mrs. Lula McGhan of Scottville. Stowell and Lloyd Lawton of Manton. Twenty-five grandchildren, two brothers and one sister also mourn his passing.

A devout Christian, in early life he affiliated with the Free Methodist church of which church he remained faithful. Services were held from the daughter's home in Ludington at one o'clock and at two o'clock at the Free Methodist church in Scottville with Rev. V.R. Russell in charge this afternoon. Interment beside the beloved wife and mother in Brookside cemetery.

Sunday afternoon Mrs. Lyman P. Lawton answered the summons of the Grim Reaper and was released from her terrible suffering. Since last November she has been bedfast and such was the nature of her disease, the pain was at times almost beyond human nature to endure. But with patience and Christian fortitude she bore it all never complaining, always appreciative of the kindness of her family and her friends.

Sarah A. Smith was born in Danby, N.Y. Feb. 14, 1852 and died May 11th, 1924. In October 1870 she came to Cadillac to keep house for a brother. Here she met and married Lyman P. Lawton a young widower with a daughter who is now Mrs. Addie McLain of Ludington to whom she was a mother.

Twenty-three years ago they came to Custer township to farm where they remained until six years ago last fall when they moved to Scottville to reside. Mrs. Lawton led a beautiful Christian life, was loving and devoted to her family, very patient and thoughtful of others, even in her sickness planning and thinking of the family welfare only.

About 12 years ago she became ill of sugar diabetes terminating into gangrene. Left to mourn the passing of this devoted wife and mother is the aged husband, four daughters, Mrs. Ethel Larr, Mrs. Maud Thompson of S. Custer; Mrs. Lula McGhan and Mrs. Winnie Standish of Scottville. The oldest son Stowell Lawton of Manton, Mich. And son Lloyd at home. One sister Mrs. Hollenbeck of Horsehead, N.Y. and 25 grandchildren.

The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Free Methodist church of which she was a devoted member.
