| Welcome to the website of the Conservaties for Climate and Environment What is Climate Change? Australia and the globe are experiencing rapid climate change. Since the middle of the 20th Century, Australia's temperatures have, on average, risen by about 1 degree celsius an increase in the frequency of heat waves and a decrease in the number of frosts and cold days. Rainfall patterns have also changed - the northwest has seen an increase in rainfall over the last 50 years while much of eastern Australia and the far southwest have experienced a decline. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found a 90% certainty that the burning of fossil fuels and other human activities are driving Climate Change. Our activities since the beginning of the industrial era in the 19th century - such as increased use of fossil fuels, broad-scale deforestation and land pattern changes - have contributed toi an increase in the atmospheric concentration of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane. By building cities and altering the nature of land use, we affect climate at a local level. Urban development has increased temperatures, and it has doubled the the impact on climate change. In the last 100 years, urban temperatures in cities, such as Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have increased by about 1.5 degrees celsius (in addition to climate change), mainly due to black tar roads, tree removal and dark coloured roofs. What must concerned citizens do? Support only the Senate Team candidates that have fighting climate change their highest priority - Conservaties for Climate & Environment. The next Federal Election is to be held on November 24. We believe that we must educate our fellow citizens that it is now time for real action on climate change. We see daily reports in all the media on what is likely to occur in the future with climate change and there are seemingly endless reports now out there to digest and more to come. But we must ask why our Federal Government has not yet committed to real targets for greenhouse emissions. It fiddles with the side issues but seems to not want to act as it will "harm the economy". Well, we say to take no action, climate change will ruin the economy in future decades. It is time for direct political action. Therefore, we see the need to rally voters to stand and support candidates that will fight against climate change when elected to the Senate from Victoria and from other States. We do not believe that parties such as the ALP & Greens have a 'mortgage' on the climate change issue. They can make wild 'promises' but they do not 'own' the issue. Climate Change affects us all, not just the Left of Australian politics! We must find climate change solutions and it will take ordinary citizens using their democratic right to obtain political power in their own right on this important issue and not worry about petty party politicking on the issue. Some solutions will entail carbon taxes, emissions trading schemes, solar, wind, tidal and thermal power, recycling water, burying CO2 deep beneath the earth through to buying light bulbs that use less energy. MORE TO COME..STAY TUNED! 14/10/2007 |
