Are'nt beards wonderful. A beard is one of the distinctive signs of manhood, and was regarded as a sacred possesion by ancient races. The Jews were proud of their beards abd wore them through the days of their Egyptian bondage, though the Egyptians shaved. The Greeks and Romans mostly shaved, still, beards were worn even then and came to be associated with wisdom. Alexander the Great outlawed beards among armies in all countries because he was beardless (some confuse this with fearless..) Had you lived in England many moons ago you would have had to pay tax on your beard, Russia applied the same Beard Tax by Peter the Great. In more modern times beards were worn or unworn depending on wether the king (or Queen) had a beard or not. Shaving the beard continues to be practised in all ranks of life in this country, although the moustache, which was one hated in England, has now been in vogue for many years. Bearded women occur occasionally and have been sometimes used as exhibitions....look out mum!!
