The World Youth Day logo is made up of four elements that symbolise: The location, the participant, the international conference of young Catholics and the presence of Pope John Paul II in Canada.
The Cross symbolises Christ: WYD is a pilgrimage and not a holiday, we will meet and experience Christ in all we do and people we meet. The cross is modeled on the Pope's crozier.
The yellow irregular circle represents the youth who attend WYD at Pope John Paul's invitation.
WYD involved ALL of Canada: The blue represents the oceans and waters. The three open sides represents the oceans bordering Canada.
The red maple leaf, the fourth and final element is the national symbol of Canada. It represents the warmth and hospitality all the pilgrims will receive.
