The World Youth Day logo is made                                               up of four elements that symbolise: The location, the                                                          participant, the international conference of young Catholics                                                      and the presence of Pope John Paul II in Canada.

The Cross symbolises Christ:                                                        WYD is a pilgrimage and not a holiday, we will meet and experience                                             Christ in all we do and people we meet. The cross is modeled on the                                                 Pope's crozier.

The yellow irregular circle represents                                            the youth who attend WYD at Pope John Paul's invitation.

WYD involved ALL of Canada: The blue represents the oceans and waters. The three open sides represents the oceans bordering Canada.

T
he red maple leaf, the fourth and final element is the national symbol of Canada. It represents the warmth and hospitality all the pilgrims will receive.

(A brief explanation based on the OFFICIAL Website)
Pope's Message issued for WYD2002
"You are the salt of the earth...... You are the light of the world"
Mt 5, 13-14
Whilst preparing there were debates on this theme. What does it mean? How should we interpret it? It is your own interpretation that will make meaning of this biblical passage to you. The Pope discusses this in his message linked to at the top of this section.
