Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some questions and answers for parents and boys considering joining
Boy Scout Troop 33 at First Lutheran Church:
Q: Where does the troop meet?
A: The troop meets every Monday night at 7:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church,
located at 324 N Third Street; DeKalb, Illinois. You can get a map by clicking
here. We meet in the Scout room in the basement of the church.
Q: What is the cost of membership?
A: Annual dues are $3 a month or $36 per year per Scout. Registration for adult
leaders is $15.
Q: How old must a boy be to join Boy Scouting?
A: A boy must 10 1/2 and completed 5th grade, or be at least 11 years of age,
or have completed his Arrow of Light award in Cub Scouts. Scouts may earn ranks
up until the age of 18, when they can be considered for a role as a Assistant
Scoutmaster.
Q: What are the goals and objectives of Troop 33?
A: The troop subscribes to the three aims of Scouting: developing character,
fostering citizenship and promoting fitness. Additionally, the troop wants to
be active providing service to the community. It seeks to provide a boy-led
troop, with adult leaders acting as advisors.
Q: Who is the Scoutmaster? Committee Chairman? COR?
Answer:
Cliff Golden has served as Scoutmaster more than 30 years.
He was previously an Asst. Scoutmaster for four years and was himself a
Scout in Troop 33, initially joining in 1965.
Kevin McArtor serves as our Troop Committee Chairman and has
two sons in the troop.
Bob Snow serves as our Charter Organization Representative. Bob has
been involved with Troop 33 since joining as a youth in 1961. He earned
the Eagle Scout Award as a Scout in Troop 33 many years ago.
Q: Who are the boy leaders of the troop?
A: The troop is currently organized into five patrols, the Lightning, Hawk, Dragon,
Forest and Music patrols. Ben H is the troop's current Senior
Patrol Leader. Our Assistant Senior Patrol Leaders are Chris B and Mitchell A. Scribe is Dan C.
Q: What activities will the troop go on?
A: "Outing" is 3/4 of the word Scouting. Troop 33 has a long tradition of
active outdoor programs. We attend summer camp each year at Camp Lowden near
Oregon, Illinois. We also do major high adventure trips each year, mini tours,
plus numerous weekend and day trips. Click here to

Q: Do fundraisers help defray activity costs?
A: We have several fundraisers each year to help boys meet the costs of
Scouting. A portion of the proceeds go to a Scout Account for each boy.
Boys can use their Scout Account money to pay for activities, dues, uniform,

Q: Can parents attend outings and meetings?
A: Absolutely. The troop operates an "open" program. Parents are entitled to
attend and watch any part of our program, and attend any outing they wish. We
want parents involved in our program, as it increases the likelyhood that your
son will remain engaged and enjoy the program.
Q: How can I help?
A: Every parent has gifts and skills that will improve our program. If you're a
hands-on person, and enjoy going on outings and working with the boys, contact
Cliff about a role as an assistant scoutmaster. If you're more a behind-the-scenes
person, or your schedule limits how much time you can devote, contact
Kevin about how you can assist as a member of the Troop Committee.
