THE GREAT DEKALB FLOOD OF 2007
- Record breaking rainfall for August.
- The Kishwaukee River was already near capacity.
- Ground already saturated, the river already full.
- A major storm system brought 5.65 inches of rain.
- Kishwaukee river breeched its levees.
- Roads and bridges were closed.
- Northern Illinois University was closed.
- Cornfest events were cancelled for Friday Aug 24.
- 600 area residents were displaced from their homes.
- About 85 flood victims found refuge in a Red Cross center.
- Some people had to be evacuated from their homes by boat.
- Governor Blagojavich declared DeKalb County a disaster area.
TROOP 33's RESPONSE
- We contacted the Red Cross and volunteered to help.
- Troop 33 was the major provider of food in the initial days.
- Prepared lunches at our food booth at Cornfest.
- Delivered lunches to Red Cross Disaster Center.
- Set up field kitchen at the Red Cross Center for breakfast.
- Provided equipment on loan for local Red Cross Chapter to use.
- Will recondition and donate bicycles for those in need.
- Will provide upcoming clean-up efforts in DeKalb/Sycamore.
