Book Mark Us !!

It was September 19, 1958 when first wife of veteran Indian actor Mehmood better known for his comic roles, gave birth to second of his eight children. Since Mehmood starting gaining popularity at the box office at around the same time, Mehmood called his son with the blue eyes Lucky. He thought to have considered Lucky to have brought luck to him. Though his relatives knew him better as Maqsood Ali Khan.

Even though his father was very rich ,famous and successful personality, Childhood of Lucky Ali was not very happy as one would have imagined. His parents got divorced when he was very young. This left him shattered.

This is a very amusing incident associated with Lucky Ali .We don't have the confirmation about the authenticity of this incident. If you think this is wrong, please let us know. "Once Mehmood went to airport to receive his family members who were returning from U.S.A. after quite some time. When the passengers from the flight arrived at the lounge, one small boy from the group yelled hysterically to his uncle ' Look uncle Look, It's Mehmood, the comedian '. We know him better as Lucky Ali. The authenticity of this incident is not established. If its untrue, please report this error. This paragraph will be dropped if we receive a single mail regarding this note.

His early years.........

.

Early years of education were spent at Moussourie's Bishop Cotton Boys School. He was sent there when he was only two and a half years old. You will be amazed to know that he was a member of School Boxing team when he was at Bishop Cotton.

He moved from Moussourie pretty early. He then went on to study at The Bombay Scottish School in Mumbai for an year, St. Joseph's High School in Banglore before finally flying off to U.S.A.

After he reached U.S., he found out that he was a born traveler. He says "The concept of home and family was not for me. I had to leave...". There he indulged himself in Horse Breeding and farming. He used to like that experience and he even says "I trained as a horseman in America. It was sheer physical labor and it made me feel good. To make a living from hard work".

He returned to Indian in 1981 to take command of his father's estate which was not in very good condition.

He did things his way, when he wanted them to do. When asked how much long it took him to break in the music scene, he replied "It did not take me long to break into the music scene once I had decided that's what I wanted to do".

Lucky Ali was associated with Marijuana for eight long years. Remembering those days, he says "Smoking was more of an act of rebellion than of recreation or escape".

.
The struggle for existence.....
.

Mehmood Ali Khan, apart from being an excellent actor as we all know, was a very good father. Lucky Ali's relationship with his father were quite confusing for Lucky. He says that his father is proud of him. He continues by saying that he loves his father very much and he tries to understand his father to the best of his abilities. Sometimes it is difficult, sometimes, it is very rewarding. Lucky's drug problem apparently led his father to produce a movie titled ' Dushman Duniya Ka '. The actor in lead role was Lucky Ali's younger brother. The story of the movie is about a young lad, who palls prey to drugs and goes on rampage. And eventually he goes on to kill himself. The screen name for the actor in lead is coincidentally ' Lucky ' . This lets us to believe that probably the script was inspired by the life of Lucky Ali. Can you guess who wrote the script for the movie???? It was Mehmood who wrote the script for the movie. Oh! by the way, Lucky Ali sang a song called ' Nasha ' in the movie.

Lucky Ali had a very strong family background in the Indian cinema, with his father being one of the most successful comedians of all times, his aunt Meena Kumari being veteran actress. Lucky was brought among poetry, music and movies. As other Bollywood families, it was expected of Lucky Ali also to get into acting field and carry on the family tradition. Lucky even started acting at an early age. He started his career as an child artist starring in a comic movie called ' Humare Tumhare '. The co-actors or should we say, the actors in lead role included the likes of  Sanjeev Kumar and Rakhee. Lucky Ali played the role of their son. We promise the entire part with Lucky Ali in it will be available in the videos section pretty soon.

Lucky Ali was even launched on the silver screen as an actor in the lead role. His first movie was called ' Yehi Hai Zindagi '. Unfortunately the movie was not a very big hit at the box office.

He has worked with director's like Shyam Benegal. In fact he has been associated with Shyam Benegal for four years in early eighties in different capacities. He played the role of ' Erasmo ' in the movie ' Trikaal ' directed by Benegal.

He has also worked on the television series directed by Benegal. This series was called ' Bharat Ek Khoj '. He played the role of King Ashoka's brother ' Tissa '

He has also acted in famous television serial ' Zara Hatke '. Lucky Ali tried his luck out with number of producers but he was not very successful.

He was actually never fond of acting. Lucky remarks, "The films I wanted to do did not earn me any money. It was a hard life and I desperately needed to earn. I wanted to get married. You cannot do that on art films and my heart bled every time I thought of doing a commercial movie. I kept asking myself: Can you do that, man? Can you do that convincingly? The money was tempting but I knew it was beyond me. So, finally, one day I stopped this battle with myself and decided to move on." He said "  Acting is hard work. You incorporate the character's personality into your own. In my experience, it has been the directors prerogative to decide what part suits who, anyway, you live and breathe the character for a long time after the work experience, which is tough because everyone keeps wondering 'what's wrong with you'. In the Indian commercial film scene you probably get desensitized because the system does not want you to think it's geared towards the unthinkable.".

All the Lucky Ali fans need not be disappointed. Once aging he has decided to give a shot and he will be seen in a role starring opposite ' Sofia Haque ' the MTV V.J. The movie is called ' Avtaar '. The movie is being directed by ' Aditya Basu Bhattacharya '. Aditya is the same guy who has directed Lucky's latest video ' Kitni Haseen Zindagi '. Now Aditya and Lucky Ali are childhood friends. The movie revolves around few N.R.I.s of course being played by Lucky Ali and Sofia Haque, settled in some European city and their life. ' Sofia Haque ' says "Avtaar is an Aditya Bhattacharya film which is set in London and is about reincarnation. Lucky plays his real-life self in the film and this is one project I am really exited about.". There are news that he will be seen in the next ' Pooja Bhatt ' venture too. The movie is called ' Sur '. The movie will be directed by ' Tanuja Chandra '. His co tars in the movie include latest heartthrob ' Jimmy Shergil '. The movie is about a music teacher, played by Lucky Ali who feels threatened by the brilliance of one of his girl students, despite the devotion of that girl towards him. Lets hope his second avtaar at the box office is lucky for him.

After trying his hands on the silver screen, Lucky decided to move around the world and find himself the best destined for him. He moved on to ' Pondicherry ' where he worked on an ' oilring ' for one whole year. He even cleaned tanks there. When asked about his experience at Pondicherry, he says " I was there for a full year and I enjoyed it very much. It was like excising without having to go to the gym. But, after sometime. I realized that my ambitions in life were different from those of guys out there who wanted to be crane operators after 14 years!. So I quickly got out.". After that Lucky Ali left for ' Banglore ' where he ran a carpet cleaning business with his childhood friend ' Aslam ' who later wrote lyrics for his albums.

.

Who do you think is lucky?? Ali or us??

.

Lucky Ali stepped in the music scene purely by an accident. He started with the music when his second mother who was American gifted him a guitar on his thirteenth birthday. Since then he hasn't looked back. His first composition was ' Nobody Loves Me '. About his music, he says "I am not a trained musician. I play by the ear, by my instincts. And I've always been singing. It's been a serious hobby with me. And I compose my own music.". The real thing happened in 1989. Lucky Ali was then cleaning carpets (for making a living). "I met Aslam at a jamaat. He wanted to write songs for me, so we got together and everything happened. We vibed well.". About his music he says "My music happens to me when I least expected it. I'm untrained and the style is free.". Everything seems to have fallen in place. Coincidentally at the same time he married and his brother in law Mike McLeary (who is his composer, arranger and manager) was an engineer at the Trident. Lucky played him ' O Sanam ' and ' Sunoh '. He clicked. After he got his album in place, he was not able to convince even a single music company to to publish his album!!!!. Lucky says "Probably the hardest part for first timers is identifying the label that wants what you have to give without wanting your blood, sweat and tears.". Finally BMG CRESCENDO agreed to release the album. His first video was directed by ' Mahesh Mathai ', for Highlight Films, his childhood friend.
He admires music played by other people too. He particularly likes people like ' Madan Mohan ', ' the Burman Family ', ' Supertramp ', ' King Crimson ', ' Elton John ', ' Cat Stevens ' etc. Among the Indian music personalities, he admires ' KK ', ' Ustad Sultan Khan ', ' Daler Mehendi ', ' Shaan ' and ' Sukhbir '.

About the fierce competition in the Indian Music Industry Lucky says "Competition? I have not come to compete with anybody. I have just come to do my stuff and get out. I don't want to hurt or harm anyone. I have their good will and they have have my good will.". When asked what inspires his creativity and his songs, the artist said "I think what inspires me is simplicity, life, creation among a few. Also people, parents, all things that are normal to life inspire me.".

He has won several awards till date. Some of them worth mentioning here are

Best Indian Artist at the Billboard awards 1997
Best Pop Male Artist at the Screen annual awards 1996
Viewers' Choice award at channel [V] annual awards 1997.

When Lucky Ali is not signing, he is an ' onion farmer ' in ' New Zealand ' and has stake in three software companies in Pune, Banglore and Hyderabd.

Lucky Ali is a family man. His first wife is called ' Masooma '. He has two children from his first wife. a five year old Son ' Taawwuz ' and a three years old daughter ' Tasmiyah '. Lucky Ali has recently married second time with a ' Parsi ' girl. The Lucky lady is called ' Inaya '. "It's something I was waiting for.". He and his family are very close to god. They even follow the ' purda ' system which is not very common now a days.

Lucky Ali has strong belief in god. When asked about his relationship with god, He speaks very elaborately. When asked whether he is religious, Lucky said "I believe in the dong of anything that is contrary to the will of creator, for me I understand faith.". When he was asked does his being of a staunch Muslim get in the way of his music, he replied "For me music is not a Nasha, rather a gift given to me by creator, the Ulema are divided on this issue and although there were quite a few fatwas for and against I decided I didn't want to be confused and I do music in order to generate a feeling of communication, friendship, peace etc.".

When his mother died in 1993, he was completely shattered. He even went on to say "For me everything died when my mother died.".

Know the man behind Sunoh, Sifar and Aks

.

Lucky Ali apart from music takes interest in nature and traveling. He enjoys sports like swimming and hiking. And you can call him born traveler. He says "The moment I get a chance to travel, I am out. That's the only time I can probably get to be one with whatever is around us. And you can find nature in anything. You don't have to go a hill station. People squatting on Mumbai roads is also natural.".

He is one man who is always on for some search. He is ' The only thing constant in nature is change ' type of guy. Today he has well over 40 years of experience. He has been an ' oil ringer ', ' carpet cleaner ', ' horse breeder ', ' software professional ', ' traveler ' what not but he still feels that he has not achieved his destiny. He says "not till I die would I have fulfilled anything.".

He is very laid back kinda man and take life as it comes. He has never involved himself in planning for future. When asked what do you have in store for future after Sunoh, He replied "Can't say. Not because I don't want to but because I Don't know.". He goes on to say "I can't plan. Each day bring its own glories, own sorrows and I take things as they come. I don't know how long I will have this talent. At the end of the day, whatever I might have reached, I come back home, go to sleep and the next day, it's back to square one. One has to start the day all over again. All I know is who I am. All I know is that I will never journey away from myself. I have no illusions about life. I hope, Inshallah, that once this phase is over, I am able to move onto something else. Something nice and productive. Even now music is jus a serious, passionate hobby, not my career.". He talks about his future "Futures are built on experiences of the past. What is important to me is 'now' , because dwelling in the past or thinking about the future is as furtile as the other. If the 'now' is uncomplicated. The future will take care of itself.". His dreams??, He explains "I want to learn to do ' Kiart ', that is the recitation of the ' Koran '. That's my dream.".

When asked if he was to tell his fans just one thing, what would it be? He said "This what I would tell my son - Keep is simple and work hard.".
