Hachiko's Story Hachiko was a white male Akita, born in Odate Japan in 1923. He belonged to a professor at Tokyo University. Each day "Hachi" accompanied his master to the Shibuya train station, and was waiting at the station each evening when he returned home. This routine continued until 1925 when the professor suffered a stroke on the job, and was never able to return home. Hachiko faithfully continued his nightly routine of waiting at the train station for his master until he died in March of 1934. He was a well known and loved figure at the train station, and a statue was erected at the train station to honor him. The bronzed statute was melted down during World War II, but a new statue in Hachiko's honor was created in 1948. It was placed at the location of the original statue. A replica of the statue at the Shibuya train station stands in front of the Odate train station. |
