It all started with a mouldy reed,"Gee, I need a chanter cap". All of the ones I could find commercially were just a "hunk" of plastic, or a simple maple cylinder. I wanted one that looked like it belonged on the end of a chanter, more like a chanter stock, so I made one. I have been turning wood since Richard Nixon was in office, so it was not that hard for me to figure out (after a great deal of research). I was not happy with the first one so I made another, and another. A buddy of mine could not understand, "It's just a chanter cap, nobody ever sees it!". "I do" was my reply, "everytime I take my pipes out of the box". He then said that if I could do a chanter cap like that, why not a full set of pipes...
My chanter caps and pipes are made entirely by hand, using 19th century technology, to re-capture the character of the vintage pipes.
