| Our History |
| We are Charlie, Laura, Mason, Walker, and Jake Gorney. Welcome to our cozy corner of the World Wide Web! We're glad you decided to pay us a visit. Charlie and I met in August 1999 at a country western dance club, Cotton Eyed Joe, in Knoxville, Tennessee. After being dance partners at the beginners dance lessons, Charlie asked me out for our first date. Six months later we were married at Cokesbury United Methodist Church in Knoxville. After two months of marriage, Charlie decided he'd had enough of civilian life and joined the Navy. He left for boot camp at the end of April 2000. Those two months apart were hard for both of us. We were able to handle it knowing we'd be together again at the end of June. Knowing Charlie was going to graduate on June 30 and where he would be stationed, I was able to arrange for our first military housing assignment. I arrived at the base on the morning of the 30th and started moving in the "essentials". But, when I pulled into our driveway, our car died! I had to have the car towed to the dealership and arrange for a rental car. All of this in 95 degree weather! Charlie arrived that night, but the guys in charge wouldn't let him leave the barracks. That first weekend we could only be with each other during the day because he had to be in by 10 pm each night. On Monday he was able to get things straightened out and he officially moved into our house that afternoon. Charlie's first assignment was to Electricians Mate Nuclear Field "A" School in Charleston, South Carolina. While he was in "A" school I worked as a personnel coordinator at Olsten Staffing. Work was real slow, and since I was the "new kid on the block," I got laid off on December 1, 2000. Not to worry...I had another job waiting for me....that of full time mommy! Charlie graduated top of his class on December 15 and was promoted to Petty Officer, 3rd Class from Fireman. He reported for Nuclear Power Training School after having two weeks off for Christmas, which we spent in Tennessee. Charlie graduated from Power School the middle of June and we went back to Tennessee for another two week break. He reported to Nuclear Power Training Unit for Prototype on July 2. He busted his butt those first few weeks trying to get ahead because we knew the baby was on his way. Mason David Gorney made his appearance July 28, 2001. My water broke at home that morning at 5 am. We got to the hospital around 7:30. The doctor and nurses let me labor all day, but I never dilated more than seven centimeters. The doctor finally made the decision to perform a c-section and we became a family of three at 8:58 pm. We now live in Cary, North Carolina. In February of 2004, we welcomed our second little boy, Walker James Gorney, to our family. We scheduled this c-section to avoid a surprise. Mason is a perfect brother and they are building a relationship only brothers can have every day. Charlie has attended school full time at North Carolina State University. He has been attached to the NROTC Unit as part of the Seaman-to-Admiral program. He's going to be a Naval Officer when he completes his degree in Electrical Engineering. He has been accepted into the Officer Nuclear Power program so that he can command a submarine one day. I'm a stay at home mom raising my two little boys. |
