The Cleveland
Chapter was once again privileged to have an excellent presentation at our
first Technical of the year. The subject was Voicing and lacquering of
hammers given to us by our own member, Ken Sloane, RPT.
His comments
were directed more about Steinway and the way they treat hammers at the
factory, though the information was suitable for all of the predicaments we
find ourselves in when dealing with hammers both old and new.
Most Steinway
hammers are now hardened with an Acrylic lacquer. It is soaked into the
hammer and according to Ken, you can never over soak a hammer.
Using various amounts of acetone thinner, he uses a 3:1; 2:1; and sometimes a
1:1 ratio of lacquer to acetone depending on the condition of the hammer(s)
being treated.
As is always the
case with Chapter Technicals, it is impossible to fully explain all of the
details that Ken shared with us. This or any other review cannot possibly
cover the many nuances brought out at this or any technical. The
only person who can get it all is the person who attends the event.
Specific
techniques of needling were mentioned, lacquering of sample hammers was
demonstrated, and products mentioned that Ken uses regularly in his work now
and in the past when he was at Oberlin College.

Obviously many
members were intrigued by the subject as we had a huge turnout-probably over
half of the active membership. Those of you not there missed the
potential to improve your skills in a way not possible by just reading the
Journal or other source article.
Watch for
future announcements of Chapter technicals and make an effort to attend these
and the other events. Our primary mission is lifting the level of achievement
of all our members.
Thank you
Ken, for a first-rate professional presentation.

Chapter Ball Game Report
The Chapter's first outing to a Cleveland Indians Game was a success both on the field and in the stands. Many came to enjoy the day as we baked in the sun or froze in the shade. Guess you had to be there. "AND A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL, Deb." Tribe 8 KC 3
