Meeting Follow-up

Again Record breaking turn out for chapter attendance.
The Cleveland Chapter, in a
follow up to the September meeting, traveled to the shop of John Cavanaugh at Oberlin
Conservatory. With a wide range of expectations from students and faculty, these
pianos have a variety of goals and can be voiced accordingly. To
satisfy this John is seeking to establish an open and clear tone and a
voice that can a range from a whisper to a snarl. Before hanging the
hammers they are reshaped, stressing the importance of a symmetrical hammer shape for
balance and focus. How the hammer feels can help determine the pre-juice ratios (again
before hanging). These will vary over the sections of the piano. John has
refined a process of adding lacquer to hammer by injecting it into the side of the
hammer. With more precision in location and the amount of lacquer applied, the time
needed for this step has increased. However, the pay back in later voicing and overall
results more than balances the effort.

Notice no lacquer reaches outer edge. When lacquer is dry it will blend in. |

A follow up to the regional seminar topic:
This is a reminder of the discussion about the 2005 regional seminar and a shout out to anyone interested in being on the steering committee. I have had one response, so far. Now there are 2 people total...can we find 4 more? We can sort out the chairman at some other time. My goal is to have a core of 6 members on the committee before we go any further. Any takers? CHANGE OF PLANS...... HELP!!!!
Due to some unexpected possible conflicts. We are
looking
again
for a Host for the Annual winter party
.
Begin your own tradition with a theme and menu of your own choosing or head back
to the old fashion Pot Luck Style. Regardless, the chapter has set
aside funds to cover the cost of things like a Honey baked ham and so forth.
Many advisors and perhaps even a co-chair person are available to assist.
Contact Bob Russell mailto:[email protected]
or Don Bratton mailto:[email protected]
for further information. Or to put an end to our search and arm twisting.
