BOHOL & PANGLAO ISLANDS

Excluding Borocay, Alona Beach in Panglao Island, Bohol is probably the finest beach resort we have visited.  We liked it so much we've come here twice. There's more to see and do here within close proximity than most any other places we have visited  in the Philippines.  You can fly to Tagbilaran, Bohol directly from Manila via Asian Spirit Airlines or you can fly almost any airline to Cebu and take one of the fast ferries (1-1/2 hours) to Tagbilaran.

Supposedly Laoag Inernational Airlines also has an afternoon from Tagbilaran to Manila on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, but I could not verify this.  You'll have to give them a call.  I have taken both Super Cat and Ocean Jet ferries.  Their service, price and crossing time are just about the same, so it's six of one and a half dozen of the other.  When you arrive at the dock, you will be surrounded by dozens of van and taxi drivers trying to grab your luggage (just like every dock in the Philippines).  If you're smart, you'll find some fellow travelers on the ferry that are also going to Alona Beach that will share the ride.  The van ride to Alona Beach should cost you about P300.

Cletus's & Mavel's Alona Beach Hotel Recommendations:

Fanciest Hotel: - Bohol Divers Lodge
Right on the beach facing the pool their rooms run from $40 to $55 with one family room going for $140.  The Alona Beach Resort is also run by Bohol Diver's and is upstairs from the main resort.  These are mostly non air-conditioned rooms that rent for $24-$32.

Best Budget Hotel - Pete's House
This is a 3 story nipa hut style building with about 8 rooms without air-conditioneding.  This is a really unique and cozy hotel.  This is one of the least expensive hotels on the beach with fan rooms going for P800 per night.

Best Bargain - Tierra Azul
Walk out of your hotel room and down about 15 steps and your right on the beach.  This hotel has about 8 rooms, 2 of which are air-conditioned.  The rooms cost P600 to P1200 depending upon the season.  They do not have TV or hot water.  We have stayed here twice.  They will pick you up and drop you off at the dock or airport ... sometimes free, sometimes not.  Mavel does her normal bargaining so we paid less than P900 for the air-conditioned room.

Our Absolute Favorite: Isis Bungalows
This "hotel" only has 2 rooms and they both are right on the beach.  The rooms are very modern, with all the amenities.  They rent for $40 to $50 depending upon the season, but sometimes they will rent for as little as P1500.
