Trip of a Life Time
3rd Carlow, Borris Scouts - Croatia 2005
3rd Carlow Borris Scout Troop are just back from what can only be described as the holiday of a life time in Pula in the Istria Region in Northern Croatia. We started off with 20 scouts and 7 leaders in Borris and thankfully we came home with the same number! Throughout the holiday we visited 4 countries - UK, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy including a day trip to the world famous Venice.
The holiday began in the early hours of the morning on the 30th of July. We headed off to Dublin airport at 2am in the morning to catch a flight to Trieste in Northern Italy, via London Std - losing Mark Doyle?s bag on the way thanks to our wonderful flight operator! On the way to our hostel we took a detour to the famous Postjania caves in Slovenia which were amazing. We eventually got to our house in Valbandon at 9pm that evening. The house catered for a maximum of 34 people with 10 bedrooms (every room with a balcony), a very large kitchen and dining room and a huge back garden with a volleyball court. The town itself was very small with 2 lovely stone beaches (typical of the Istria Region), a few shops and restaurants and lots of holiday homes.
Meals were prepared by the scouts themselves on a rota basis (with a little help from the leaders). We never went hungry with ample supplies of everything that we needed. Even our Croatian neighbours were supplying us with 20kg water melons for free! We had a jam packed program for the week that kept the leaders busy and the scouts happy. Our activities ranged from snorkeling, scuba diving, banana boats, water skiing, water jungle (trampolines and bouncing castle in the sea), jet skiing, cliff diving off 13m rocks, a visit to a deserted island & a Croatian style BBQ (still don?t know what meat was in that sausage Jennifer?), day trip to Venice, historic town tours, shopping, volleyball, swimming and just having the craic! The beach was a 10 min walk from the house. Beside the beach there were soccer pitches & basketball courts. Overall the activities were excellent and well run and I cannot speak highly enough of JEKA, our tour operator specializing in group holidays for youth groups. On our return journey we spent one night in Trieste, Italy (where James Joyce began writing Ulysses). We stayed in a youth hostel where we had our last banquet before the long journey back home to Borris on the 10th of August.
It was a fantastic trip and everyone really enjoyed themselves. This was mainly due to the scouts themselves and their excellent behaviour together with a few hard working leaders that never stopped going all week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank both the scouts and the leaders for a great week. Later in the year we will have a Croatia night where we will show the video and look at photos and all parents and scouts will be welcome. Where to next, the world is our oyster!
So after all of that we have to get back to reality. Scouts is back on Tuesday nights from 8pm to 9:30pm. All new members from 6th class (11 yrs) up are welcome to join. Just call in any night to talk to us with a parent.
