All About Prayer

To be sure,

The most important thing about prayer

is the message you are conveying to God

(Psalms 54:2, Luke 18:9-14, Ephesians 6:18),

Whether silently (Nehemiah 2:4-5, 1 Thessalonians 5:17),

Whispered… (Isaiah 26:16),

Spoken… (Psalm 66:19, Daniel 9:20),

Called upon in a raised voice… (Jeremiah 29:12, Acts 4:24),

Sung… (Acts 16:25, 1 Corinthians 14:15, Psalm 96:1-2),

Or cried out … (Hebrews 5:7, 2 Chronicles 32:20, Ezra 10:1, Psalms 5:2).

A guide for prayer is in Matthew 6:5-15.

Kneeling is a common position in which to pray in

(Daniel 6:10, Acts 20:36, Acts 21:5).

Another common practice was to lay your hands on someone as you pray for them

Or commissioned them with a role in the church

(Matthew 19:13-15, Acts 6:6, Acts 13:3, James 5:14-16).

In the Garden of Gethsamene, Jesus prayed kneeling, with his face to the ground

(Luke 22:41, Matthew 26:39).

You could also pray while standing (Mark 11:25).

Praying with your hands spread out is mentioned in Isaiah 1:15.

Looking toward heaven is another possibility (John 17:1).

Lifting up holy hands in prayer is urged in 1 Timothy 2:8.

The idea of wrestling in prayer (Colossians 4:12) is more figurative than literal,

Although Jacob did literally wrestle in prayer (Genesis 8:24-30).

Praying in a foreign language is fine, as long as you understand what you're saying

(1 Corinthians 14:13-15).
