John Lothrop was the twelfth child of Thomas Lowthropp, of Cherry Burton, later of Ellen in Yorkshire, Eng.; who was son of John of Lowthropp, a parish in the East Riding of York. The name has been variously spelled; Lathropp, Lothrop, Lathrop, Laythrope, Lawthrop, Lawthorpe, & c.; said to be derived from the Saxon words La: to look, see, behold; and throp: a village; hence; Lathrop, see the village or town. The name of his first wife, who he m. about 1620; and who d. 1633, is unknown; m. 2d, Feb. 17, 1636-7. Widow Ann Hammond. He was an educated man, took orders in the English church, and was settled at Egerton, Kent, fifteen miles from London, seperated from the church and removed to London, 1624; and succeeded Rev. Henry Jacob, first pastor of the first Independent or Congregational Society, London, Apr.29, 1632, his congregation were apprehended by Tomlinson, the officer of Archbishop Laud, at the house of Mr. Humphrey Barnett, a brewer's clerk in Black Fryers. Forty two were arrested, eighteen of whom escaped, and imprisoned in the Clink, New Prison, and the Gate House; where they were confined about two years; when they were released on bail, except Mr. Lothrop, for whom no favor could at first be obtained; when he petitioned the King, Charles I, for liberty to leave England,which was granted. During his imprisonment his wife died, and the distress of his family, moved the government to permit him to depart. He arrived at Boston in the Griffin, Sept. 18, 1634; his children, Jane, Barbara, and Thomas probably came with him. He settled in Scituate, Mass., and was pastor of the church organized there, Jan. 8, 1634. Some of the members of his church in London also settled in Scituate. Mr. Lothrop and a large number of his church removed to Barnstable, Oct. 21, 1639; where he was pastor of the church the remainder of his life. A portion of his house there, was said to be part of the "Barnstable Inn," in 1900. He d. there, Nov. 8, 1655.
