bullet Dr. John HULBERT(319) was born on 29 Oct 1735 in Connecticut, Woodbury (now Roxbury). He died on 22 Jun 1815 in Massachusetts, Alford. He was prob. in the Co. of Capt. Wait Hinman, which marched from Woodbury, for the relief of Fort William Henry, 1757. It is traditional that he was educated at Yale Coll., grad. Nassau Hall, Princeton, N. J., 1762; res. Sharon, Ct., where he received part of his medical education; and at Egremont, Mass.; removed to Alford, Mass., and bought sixteen acres of land there, from Anthony Haskins, 1771; first physician in Alford; selectman, 1773,6,8, and 1781; town clerk through the revolution, and was succeeded by Capt. Seth Hamlin; mem. of Com. of Correspondence, inspection and safety; and for a time surgeon in the war; justice of the peace; and moderator in town meetings; mem. of the Mass. convention which ratified the U.S. Constitution; a prominent man.

Judge Church of Conn. In an address stated: "A spark from that flame in Berkshire county had flown over into Sharon: one Dr. Hurlbut, an emissary of Shay's, visited that town in the spring of 1787, to enlist men in his cause. He made some impression," It is stated in the history of Litchfield County, Ct.: "In the spring of 1787, during the excitement of the Insurrection under Shay, in Mass., Dr. John Hulbert, who resided in Alford, who was an active partizan of Shay, came to Sharon to secure co-operation; having received his medical education there, and possessing qualities calculated to give effect to his representations, he soon succeeded in organizing a considerable number of men under one William Mitchell; who was constituted their captain. Hulbert was prosecuted under an act against vagrants, vagabonds and common beggars; but on his solemn promise to leave the state forthwith was suffered to depart. The others were bound over to court on charges of treasonable practice." It is said his commission as juitice (justice) of the peace was revoked, 1788, because he favored Shay's Rebellion. He must have had a large following of friends in Mass., as he was representative to the legislature the same year.

Mrs. Hazen remembered in 1894, that he had, in her childhood, at Alford, a famous flower garden, on an elevation, reached by a long flight of stone steps, where he entertained his friends in style. He changed the spelling of his name about 1792, from Hurlbut to Hulbert, Elijah Hamlin, who removed from Alford, to East Bloomfield, N. Y., about 1792, kindly assisted to support a Dr. Hulbert, who was a pensioner, and his wife, who was a school teacher, at his home in N.Y. Whether they were identical with Dr. John Hulbert and wife of Alford, has not been ascertained. Both d. Alford; she Nov., 1823; he June 7, 1815. A tombstone was erected at Alford to his memory in recent times, inscribed as follows:

bullet Thomas HULBERT(323) was born in 1598 in England. He died in 1673 in Connecticut, Wethersfield, Hartford. It is supposed he came over in 1635; for he was a soldier under Lion Gardiner, who built and commanded the fort at Saybrook, Ct., the latter an Englishman, and an engineer, who had been in Holland in the Service of the Prince of Orange; but was engaged by the proprietors of the Conn. Patent, issued by King Charles I, to Lord Say and Sele, Lord Brooke and others, granting land on the Conn. (illegible) to erect a fort at its mouth. Gardiner embarked at London in the Bachilor of twenty five (illegible) Aug. 1, 1635, with his wife and female servant, and eleven male passengers, and arrived at Boston, Nov. 28, following. It is believed that Thomas Hurlibut came with him. The lineage and the spelling of his name has not been discovered. The author of the Harlibut genealogy, without positive proof, inclined to believe that he was a Scotchman. He was wounded by an arrow, in a battle with the Pequot Indians, at Saybrook, Feb. 22, 1637, as appears from a letter written by Gardiner, June 1660: "In the 23d of Feb. I went out with ten men and three Dogs Half a Mile from the House to burn the weeds, Leaves and Reeds upon the Neck of Land, because we had felled twenty timber trees, which we were to roll to the Waterside to bring home every Man carrying a Length of Match with Brimstone-matches with him to kindle the Fire withal. But when we came to the small of the Neck, the weeds burning. I having before this set two sentinels on the small of the Neck, I called to the Men that were burning the Reeds to come away; but they would not until they had burnt up the rest of their Matches. Presently there started up four Indians out of the firey Reeds, but they ran away. I called to the rest of our men to come out of the Marsh. Then Robert Chapman and Thomas Hurlibut, being sentinals, called to me, saying: there came a Number of Indians out of the other side of the Marsh.

Then I went to stop them, that they should not get the Woodland; but Thomas Hurlbut cried out to me that some of the Men did not follow me; for Thomas Rumble and Arthur Branch threw down their two Guns and ran away; then the Indians shot two of them that were in the Reeds; and sought to get between us and home; but kept us in a Half-moon; we retreating and exchanging many a shot, so that Thomas Hurlbut was shot almost through the Thigh. John Spencer in the back into his kidneys; myself into the Thigh; two more shot dead. But in our Retreat I kept Hurlbut and Spencer still before us; defending ourselves with ournaked swords, else they had taken us all alive; so that the two sore wounded Men, by our Retreat got home with their Guns; when our two sound Men ran away, and left their Guns behind them." Hurlbut was a blacksmith, and after the Pequot war, located and established himself in Wethersfield; and was one of the early settlers, and first blacksmith of the place, clerk of the Trainband, 1640; deputy, grand juror, and constable, 1644. He received various grants of land in the several divisions of the town, which were recorded together, 1647.

The town of Wethersfield in 1660 granted him lot 39, one of the "Four acre lots" - in Naubuc, east side of the river - which he sold to Thomas Hollister. For his services in the Indian wars, the Assembly voted him a grant of 120 acres of land, Oct. 12,1671. No attempt appears to have been made to avail himself of this bounty, nor by his sons; but on the petition of his grandson John Hurlbut, Jr., of Middletown, Ct., it was set off in 1694. It is traditional that the house in Wethersfield occupied in 1888 by Miss. Harriet Mitchell, sixth in descent from Thomas Hurlbut. Stood upon the site of his ancient homestead. His wife was named Sarah; it is not known whether he had any daughters. He d. Wethersfield, 1673.

bullet Joseph HULL(324) died on 19 Nov 1665. Rev. Joseph Hull,1 of his early history little is known. May 5, 1635 twenty families from England, with Mr. Hull as their minister, settled at Weymouth, Mass.
July 8, 1636, the land on which they settled was granted to them by Mass. Colony; made freeman Sept. 1635; deputy to General court, 1638-9; Sept. 6, 1638, he was elected Magistrate for Hingham. In the spring of 1639, Mr. Hull and several families from Weymouth, and Hingham decided to remove to Barnstable with the company to be organized by Mr. Collicut of Dorchester. He preached a farewell sermon to the people of Weymouth, May 5, 1639, and came to Barnstable the same month. Elder Thomas Dimmock was there March preceeding. To them the Plymouth Colony granted lands to the town; they were the founders of the town, and Mr. Hull being the minister, on him devolved the greater responsibility; at the Dec. term 1639. Mr. Hull and Mr. Dimmock were deputies to the Colony Court, and he was admitted freeman. Mr. Lothrop and his church came Oct. 21, 1639. Mr. Hull welcomed them to their homes and assigned them lands. Mr. Lothrop's church were a majority and they preferred their own pastor and Mr. Hull was ousted as pastor of the church, and from his offices; resulting in controversy and ill feelings. Lands that he had sold Mr. Hinckley the town claimed, and Mr. Hinckley sued him for damage. Mr. Otis was of opinion that he was not so bad as his enemies represented. In one short year he fell from his position, lost his influence, was unpopular, his friends deserted him, and others reaped the fields he had sown; he was chagrined and the ungenerous treatment he had received induced him to move. He sought to preach to his friends in Yarmouth, for which he was excommunicated by the Barnstable church; and then prosecuted for preaching as an excommunicated person. Mr. Otis says: If the reader decides that Mr. Hull was a contentious man and a heterodox teacher of religion, I fear that he will have to travel many a weary mile to find a peaceful man and a sincere christian. For a time he removed from the Colony and resided at Dover and the Isles of Shoals. But little is known of his family; he was poerhaps married twice; he d. Nov. 19, 1665, and his widow, Agnes, administered his estate. Several children came with him from England.
