HAMLIN(234) was born on 1 Jan 1714
in Massachusetts, Barnstable, Barnstable County. He died in 1805 in Massachusetts,
Springfield. b. Barnstable, Mass., July 1, 1714; Published to be married Rochester,
Mass., Sept. 24, 1737, to Mary Gibbs, of (Agawam) Plymouth, Mass.; b. Jan. 12,
1718, see sketch of his brother Thomas. He probably removed with his father's
family from Barnstable to Agawam before 1729. Isaac Hamlin and wife Mary were
original members of the church in Wareham, 1739; and were dismissed to Sharon,
May 30, 1742; their son Seth was baptized, Wareham, Mar. 14, 1742. He and his
brother Thomas bought land in Sharon, 1743-4. He bought a share in the Iron
works there Sept., 1848; and sold part of it to Jacob Bacon, Feb. 27, 1749.
Ebenezer (his father) and Isaac Hamlin bought land of Doty, Apr. 3, 1752.
The date of his removal from Sharon is not known. His name appears on the records
of Lenox, Mass., june 11, 1777; on that day Thomas Landers conveyed to Isaac
Hamblen of Lenox, twenty acres of land; upon which he and Job Gilbert erected
a grist mill, and half of a saw mill, house and barn to Perez and Asa Hamblin,
"my sons."
At the same time Perez and Asa gave him a life lease of the same property; which
Isaac and wife quit claimed to Joseph Goodwill. This was the mill at Lenox Furnace
(now Lenox Dale,) conducted in modern times by Ward Lewis; which was burned some
years ago. They were admitted to the Cong. church in Lenox "by recommendation,"
Aug. 20, 1780. He d. Springfield, Mass., 1805.

He was buried in Massachusetts, New Lenox. He appears to have lived at Spencertown,
1775; his name appears on the records of Lenox, Mass., 1787-8, and at Washington,
Mass., 1797; stone-cutter. He was perhaps a Rev. soldier; but as there was another
of the same name, Isaac Hamlen,6 of Cummington, Mass., who was a soldier, it
is difficult to distinguish the service of each; one Isaac Hamlen was private
in Van Ness' N.Y. Regt. He d. Washington, Aug. 10, 1810; his son Stephen was

Capt.
Jabez HAMLIN(236) was born on 17
Jul 1735 in Massachusetts, Agawam, Plymouth County. He died on 8 Sep 1826 in
New York, Alford. He removed with his parents to Sharon, Ct. about 1742. The
records there show, that he bought land adjoining the Indian pond, on the line
of the Oblong, from Daniel Barnes in 1763. In 1765 he and his wife conveyed
to Amasa Hamlin the home lot of her father. Thomas Barnes, adjoining Indian
pond; which was set off to her on distribution of his estate, Oct. 9, 1765; they
conveyed the one third right of her mother's estate, to S. Holly. He was a merchant
in Sharon, failed in business there, and removed from the place, probably about
1790. He sold land at Indian pond, Sharon, to Joseph Lake, 1772; it is supposed
that he resided at some time in Salisbury, Ct. show that Daniel Sherwood, of
that place mortgaged land there, to Jabez Hamlin of Hinsdale, Mass. on Aug. 29,
1794. By hard work of his family, his fortune was retrieved; and in later years
he sold the farm to his sons Amasa and Jabez; removed to Alford, Mass., and again
sold goods in a room adjacent to his dwelling there. A grist-mill in Alford
was conveyed to him in 1802; conducted at one time by his son-in-law, Ralph H.
Hulbert; and was in his possession at his death. It is traditional that he was
a captain in the Revolution; and was captured in the retreat from Long Island
in 1776; he was a pensioner, and his sword, seen in his lifetime by his grand
children, was well remembered by them in recent years. After his death a quantity
of continental money was found in his desk; no records of his service has been
discovered. Probably he lived in Sharon during the Revolution and afterwards.
It was his wish to spend his last days with his son Jabez, who in 1825, sold
his farm at Hillsdale, removed to Alford, cared for his aged parents until their
death, and settled the estate. He was a gentleman of the old school, tall and
erect, of soldierly bearing, fine constitution, and possessed of an iron will.
His will was drawn by Gen. Whiting, of Great Barrington; his funeral was preached
by Timothy Woodbridge, the blind Presbyterian preacher, grandson of Jonathan
Edwards. Sixty children and grand children attended. The following record of
his family dated Mar. 1, 1800, is copied from a bible published at Edenburg,
1797, in possession of Cicero J. Hamlin, Esq., of Buffalo, N. Y., a grand son.
Both d. Alford; he Sept. 8, 1826; she Feb. 14, 1727. (Must be an error, has
to be 1827.)

James
HAMLIN(109) was born on 10 Apr 1636
in England, St. Lawrence Parish, Reading, Berkshire. He died on 3 May 1718
in Massachusetts, Tisbury, Dukes County. He was baptized into the LDS church
on 31 Oct 1930. [5] James Hamblen,2 (James,1) It is supposed that he was born
in England and baptized in the parish of St. Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire, England,
April 10, 1636; that he came over with his mother prior to 1642, and resided
at Barnstable, first at his Coggin's Pond lot, until 1702; when he removed to
Hamblin's Plains, West Barnstable; where his son Ebenezer occupied the old homestead,
which he afterwards soldto Col. John Gorham.
Mr. Gustavus Hinckley, of Barnstable writes in 1894, that the site of his house
on his father's Coggin's Pond lot is well known; it having been owned and occupied
by three generations of Gorham; a modern house was built about forty years ago
over the old cellar. Mr. Otis says, that he lived all his life in Barnstable;
but David Hamblen says, he died in Tisbury, May 3, 1718. He was a farmer, an
exemplary member of the church and a good citizen. He married Mary Dunham, November
20, 1662. She was born 1642. Otis says, she was probably the daughter of Dea.
John of Plymouth; but Prof. Charles E. Hamlin, who gave considerable attention
to this branch of the family, and from which he descended, says: she was daughter
of John, of Martha's Vineyard. Perhaps Otis and Prof. Hamlin referred to the
same individual. Mr. Hinckley says, her grave is about sixty rods distance from
the site of the house, on their Coggin's Pond lot, and the slate headstone bears
the inscription: "Mary, wife of James Hamlin, died April ye 19th, 1715,
in ye 73d year of her age."
James Hamblen is expressly named in his father's will, dated January 23, 1683.
David Hamblen states that his children, Mary, Eleazer, and Experience, are expressly
referred to in his will, as being then deceased in 1717; and inters that his
children Elisha, John and Benjamin were also dead, from the fact that neither
of them, nor any child of theirs is mentioned in the will.
His name frequently appears in the Colonial records: May 29, 1670, James Hamblen,
Juni., in list of Freeman. June 5, 1671, James Hamblen, Juni., app. To inspect
the Ordinaries (Taverns) in Barnstable. June 6, 1682, James Hamblen, Juni.,
Member of Grand Enquest.

James
HAMLIN was born in 1606 in England, London, London. Out of the book "The
History of the Hamlin Family" by H. Franklin Andrews, 1894, states that
James Hamlin as we have stated, in this book is stated as James Hamblen. He
died on 22 Oct 1690 in Massachusetts, Barnstable, Barnstable County. He emigrated
SPRING 1639 from America. (From the book "The Hamlin Family Genealogy of
Capt. Giles Hamlin of Middletown, Connecticut - 1684 - 1900, by Hon. H. Franklin
Andrews, Published by the author in Exira, Iowa, 1900.)
Brief mention of the Hamlin's is found in various genealogical and historical
works, showing them to be widely distributed over this country. It is believed
that no extensive work of the family history, except by the writer, has ever
been previously published. The origin of the race is hidden in the mists of
the centuries past, where dim glimpses of the name occurs, indicating them to
be of Germanic origin; residing on the river Hamel in lower Saxony, where the
ancient town of Hamlin is situated, at the confluence of the river Hamel with
the Weiser. The name Hamelin is still common in France, from wence some have
emigrated to this country and to Quebec, Canada; where they have been numerous.
Several of the name, men of renown, went in the Army of William the Conqueror,
to England in 1066; where the name has since been a common one. It was anciently
spelled Hameline, later Hamlyn, which is still retained by some; but like most
old English names, the spelling has not been uniform; and is found in various
forms, viz: Hamlin, Hamlen, Hamline, Hamlyn, Hamblin, Hamblen, and perhaps other
forms. The most approved Angelicized form of the name is Hamlin.
Research shows that several of the name came early to this country from England;
a few, probably of English stock, from Ireland and Scotland; and some from France.
For the information of those who may desire to make research for other branches
of the family, the records of some of the early Hamlin settlers are here given.
________________________________________________________________________
So far as is known James Hamlin was the first of the name in America. Little
has been learned of his early life. The records show that he came from London,
England, and settled in Barnstable, Massachussetts in the spring of 1639. Records
exist from which traces of him have been discovered. The late David Hamblen,
Esq., of Boston the first to investigate the family history, about 1849, caused
research to be made in England for his ancestry, and discovered records which
may relate to him and his ancestors. vis:

THOMAS HAMELIN JAMES HAMELIN
Gentleman.
London, 1623.
From which it was understood that he was brother of Thomas, gentleman, of London,
living in 1623; sons of Giles, of Devonshire; son of John, of Cornwall, England,
who was living in 1570.
This is not regarded by the writer as conclusive proof of his pedigree, but a
suggestion where to search for further evidence of it. The Parish records of
St. Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire, England, contain, as we suppose the baptisms
of his children who were born in England: and the burial of one child:
BAPTISMS
BURIALS
Hamlin, James, son of James, Oct. 31, 1630. Hamlin,
James, Oct. 24, 1633.
Hamblin, Sarah, dau. of James, Sept. 6, 1632.
Hamlin, Mary, dau. of James, July 27, 1634.
Hamlin, James, son of James, Apr. 10, 1636.
It thus appears that his oldest child died in England. When or how James Hamlin
came to America has not been discovered, but an approximate inference is ascertained
when the members of the family left England and came to America from the dates
of the baptisms of his children above; and the dates of the births of the children
born in Barnstable. It appears to have been the custom of the family to baptize
the children on or near the day of birth if possible: so that the dates of baptism
are supposed to be about the dates of birth of those born in England. The first
record of his children born in Barnstable is that of Bartholomew, born Apr. 20,
1642, we have found no record either in England or Barnstable, of the birth of
the child, Hannah: but infer that she was born in England, between 1636 and
1642. Possibly the family was broken up about the time of her birth, preventing
the record of her birth, or it may have been recorded elsewhere from where the
others were found. It is believed that James Hamlin came to America without
his family about 1638-9, and that they followed him later. While no record of
the fact has been discovered; other circumstances render it probable that he
was obliged to leave his family and flee from England to escape religious persecution.
This may account for the failure to discover the time and manner of his passage:
which may have been intentionally concealed, for his escape and safety. He
was a Puritan and a member of Mr. Lothop's church after the latter came to Barnstable.
We have seen that he came from London: he may have been a member of the Independent
church there, and fled from the persecution of Archbishop Laud, under Charles
I; but there is no proof of it.
An account of the persecutions of the congregation of Mr. Lothrop in England
will be of interest, and may in the future lead to information concerning our
ancestor.
Rev. John Lothrop was pastor of an Independent or Congregational Society, at
Southwalk, London. ********Apr. 29, 1642*******, forty-five members of this
church was apprehended for unlawful meeting, eighteen of whom escaped. Some
were confined in the Clink, New Prison, and the Gate House, for about two years,
and then released on bail; except Mr. Lothrop, for whom no favor could at first
be obtained. There is some question as to the terms of his release, but the
fact remains that these people caused the English government no little trouble:
religion was regulated by law at that period: and this society were non-conformists.
That they believe they were right does not alter the fact. The exact date of
their release is not given but on Sept. 18, 1634, the Griffin and another slip
arrived in Boston with passengers, among them who were Mr. Lothrop and thirty
of his followers. It is not supposed Hamlin was with them. Soon after Mr. Lothrop
and most, if not all those who came with him, went to Scituate, Massachussetts,
where there was a small settlement of his old friends, whom he had known in England,
and who invited he to become their pastor. There were nine of these families
then at Scituate who had previously come from England, settling first at Plymouth;
and Mr. Lothrop gives a list of "The House in ye plantation of Scituate
att my Comeing hither, onely weh was aboute the end of Sept. 1634, -- all weh
small plaine pallizadoe Houses." The name of James Hamlin is not in the
list, nor does it appear there down to the date of removal of Mr. Lothrop and
his church to Barnstable hereafter related.
In 1899 the home of James Hamblin in Barnstable was visited by the writer and
a picture of it obtained through the kindness of Mr. Gustavus Hinkley, of Barnstable,
and Miss Deborah Hamblin, of Yarmouth, Mass., the latter a descendant of James
Hamlin. The home lot of James Hamlin, senior, of eight acres. probably one of
those laid out by Mr. Collicut, was bounded north, and west by a small and beautiful
sheet of water, anciently known as Coggin's and also as Cooper's Pond; the present
county road passing through it east and west leaves a triangular piece of about
two acres of the north end, where the buildings were located, between the highway
and the pond occupied in 1899 by Mr. A.T. Jones The ancient dwelling thereon
has been gone for a century, but its site was nearer the line between the Hamlin
lot and the lot of Gov. Hinkley to the eastward, and from which it was seperated
by a rough, loose wall. Mr. Gustavus Hinkley stated that a well was situated
on the line between the two lots, which could be used in the olden times in common
by the occupants of both lots: but it had been covered over by the wall for
many years; that he remembered when a boy of finding it by dropping pebbles in
the holes in the wall and hearing them fall into the water in the well, but its
exact location he had forgotten. On the opposite or north side of the pond was
the lot of Henry Coggin: a public watering place on the shore of the Hamlin lot.
A modern house stands on the Hamlin lot west of the site of the ancient dwelling.
The present highway was laid out through the Hamlin lot in 1686, and the balance
of his lot laid south of this road -- between it and the commons. The ancient
graveyard lies to the eastward. His lands as described on the records in 1667
were as follows: Eight acres of upland, be it more or less, butting westerly
upon ye Highway against ye pond. Easterly by ye commons, bounded northerly by
Thomas Hinkley and southerly by ye commons. (This was his home lot above described,
but the ancient highway which went north to the pond was changed in 1686); also
three shares in Calves pasture bounded westerly by Gdd (Goodman) Bearse, easterly
by John Phinney, two shares more bounded westerly by John Phinney, easterly by
Gdd Bearse; one share more bounded westerly by ye land of Henry Coggin, deceased,
easterly by John Phinney; six acres of upland more or less, in ye sd Calves pasture
bounded easterly by John Phinney, westerly partly by John Phinney and partly
by ye beach; twenty acres of upland, more or less, bounded easterly by Henry
Bourn, westerly by John Cooper, southerly by the commons, northerly by ye marsh;
also all ye marsh butting against ye sd upland, bounded easterly by Henry Bourn,
westerly by John Cooper, northerly to ye great creek by Jewell's Island: one
acre of marsh meadow, more or less, bounded easterly by John Cocker, westerly
by Thomas Hinkley; forty acres of upland butting against ye Great Indian pond
running northeast into ye woods, bounded southerly by Thomas Lothrop's and northerly
by ye commons.
The accompanying picture looking south from the north side of Coggin's pond gives
a good view of the site of the home of James Hamlin, the immigrant. The old
house stood in the open space between the boat and the stone wall to the left,
which is the division between the Hamlin and the Hinkley lots. The house in
the right of the picture of the Hamlin lot is a modern structure; the old country
road runs in front of it, nearly east and west, and between it and the house
in the center of the picture. In ancient times the road touched the pond at
the right of the new house, for a watering place; but is now shut off from the
pond. The house shown dimly at the extreme left is that of Gov. Thomas Hinkley.
The name of James Hamblen appears frequently in the records of Plymouth Colony.
The first mention is March 1, 1741-2, James Hamblen was propounded for Freeman.
