A Bear Story
(A true one. Believe it-or not)

The call of the ever beckoning mountain peaks that towered above the small village of Alpine and the lure of the wild life that abounded there undisturbed fifty years ago, touched a responsive chord in the heart of one, Frederick Hamblin. He seemed to be patterned inkkeeping with his environment, being in his thirties and standing over six feet and was well muscled and proportioned. His heart was that of a true sportsman and lover of game and of the hunt. The sight of him gave one a thrill similar to that given by a majestic pine tree.
One wintery afternoon this frontiersman took his gun and mounting his horse set out for a few hours of recreation in a hunt, There was snow on the ground. He rode his horse to the foot of the mountain, tethered him to a tree and made his way on foot up the mountain side seeking trace of game. Coming upon some large bear tracks he followed them for some little time, and found a spot where the bear had been lying down. Filled with the thrill of the chase he pursued.
As he was going around a clump of thick brush he was startled by a fierce growl close behind him. Turning quickly found himself standing face to face with a bear standing on its haunches. An instant they stood there, the bear and the man, the hunter and the hunted both giants of their species for it seemed to Hamblin that the bear out measured him in height.
The bear advanced ready to fight leaving the man no choice in the matter. The nearness of bruin made flight out of the question; there was no time in which to cock and fire the old fashioned barreled rifle so Hamblin's attack consisted of ramming the rifle butt down the bear's open mouth with all his might. This action gave him some advantage as it broke out several of the bear's teeth and injured his throat and seemed to make his jaws numb for a time, as he did not try to bite. The bear knocked the gun to the ground breaking it into two pieces and leaving the man with no weapon but his hands.
Then followed a hand to hand fight between the man and the bear, a fight of hate born of instinctive fear, best described as a cross between a boxing and a wrestling match but with no referee to call rounds and no holds barred. Each contestant struggled with equal tenacity for the advantage of the up side of the hill. Around and around they went. At one time Hamblin's foot caught on a dead limb and it seemed for an instant that he would go down. Realizing that would mean his finish he seemed to draw upon his nerve for superhuman strength and was able to regain his footing and the up hill side again. The bear clawed him on the shoulder and the hip leaving deep scratches from which the blood ran freely. Then the beast's jaws seemed to become sensitive and he began trying to bite and succeeded in getting Hamblin's left hand in his mouth and chewing it for a time. Hamblin managed to reach his broken rifle and beat the bear about the face with it until his hand was released. The absence of the teeth lost in the first of the encounter probably saved the hand.
By this time the sun was setting low and it was getting colder. Hamblin was almost exhausted but so was his opponent, for looking the man squarely in the eye bruin seemed willing to call it a draw and started to walk away. As Hamblin made the first move to go, bruin seemed to consider for an instant returning and resuming the fight, but to the relief of the man he ambled off into the timber.
The black curtain of night falls swiftly in the mountains and knowing that he must lose no time in getting to his horse before it became dark and he become too weary to move, Hamblin bandaged his left hand as best he could with his red bandana hankerchief and taking as trophy his badly scarred rifle he began the journey down the mountain side. Seversl times it seemed that he could go on no further because pain from the exertion of the fight as well as loss of blood and pain from his wounds. But knowing his life depende
upon his reaching home without delay he plodded as until he reached his horse.' Parents: Isaiah HAMBLIN and Daphne HAYNES.

[11] Israel Hamblen,2 (James,1) born in Barnstable, June 25, 1652; baptized same day; married first, Abigail, who died about the year 1700; second, Jemima. The records do not give their surnames.

He lived in a solitary spot, and farming could not have been his principal occupation; and is called "Mr." On the record, which shows that he was a man of prominence. The site of his home was in a small cleared space in the forest, now covered by trees, in the east parish, on Dimmock's Lane, by the side of Israel's Pond, named after his son, - about a mile and a half south of the county road; his nearest neighbor was more than a half a mile distant. His occupation is not known. It has been suggested that as he did not come to the distinction of being called "Mr." From any civil employment or office; that he may have been employed as Master or Captain of some of the numerous fishing and whaling vessels employed on the east coast in summers, and in trading voyages to the West Indies, in winter. His first wife was perhaps a daughter of Joshua Lombard. He is named in the Will of his father, January 23, 1683.
