Dear Bro:

I write to inform you of a sad accident that occured near Spring Lake Villa, (3 miles south of here) at about 4 p.m. yesterday.

As Bro. John Green and family of Nephi, formerly of Fountain Green, were passing that renowned place (Spring Lake Villa), the forward wheels of the wagon in which they were traveling suddenly disappeared to the hubs in a quagmire made by water that has long crossed the road near there, to the serious annoyance of the traveling public and Bro. Green, his wife and two children, who were sitting near the front of the wagon, were precipitated under the heels of the horses. Before Bro. Green could recover himself and check the horses, they plunged forward and the wheels passed over the head of his prostrate wife, inflicting terrible gashes and depriving her of all consciousness. The unfortunate woman was borne to an adjacent house and died in about half an hour. One of the children was very seriously if not mortally injured; the other happening to fall near the middle of the road, the wagon passed over it harmlessly.

The following item of news from Fountain Green, San Pete County, Utah was published in the "Deseret News" of January 12

"Fountain Green, Jan 9. A pottery has been lately established under the superintendant of C_____ s. Berthelson, and they are turning out a very fine article of earthenware.
M. John Green, a very enterprising young man, has been testing, and trying experiments in making and burning bricks, his first and second attempt were rather a failure, but still preserving his labor have been crowned with success, and he has made and burned a small kiln of bricks, equal to any in the territory and of a good quality; they are well spoken of and highly recommended by the citizens.
Mr. Green proposes making this his business and will likewise burn lime and keep a supply constantly on hand.

Personal Record

John Green, father of Richard E. Green, was born in Basford, Notts, England, 12 May 1835. He was raised on a farm. He joined the Mormon Church and sailed on the ship Germanecus 4 April 1854. He arrived in New Orleans, 12 June 1854. He located at Burlington, Iowa. His mother Harriet Hullett, came in 1855 and 1856, they crossed the plains in Captain Pulemon G Merrills ox train. Arrived in Salt Lake City 18 August 1856. They moved to Provo, Utah and built a log home. When the land was divided, John recieved twenty acres and a city lot.
After settling in Fountain Green, John became a farmer, brickmaker, and lime manufacture. He began making brick, having a good yard and a lime kiln, he shipped brick all over the country.
He took part in the Black Hawk War, serving as Captain of the Minutemen, and went out to meet Johnson's Army. He was many years leader of the choir and with his wife sang the first hymn in the town.
He was married to Mary Stafford Partington 25 December 1857. They had five children. Mary was killed by falling from a wagon on the 11 July 1866.
He married again in Salt Lake City, 11 November 1866, this time to Hephzebah, daughter of William and Hephzebah Matthews. They had three children.
He married his third wife, Elizabeth Ann Wilson, on the 16 January 1879 at Salt Lake City. They were married by D.H. Wells. They had ten children. Elizabeth died 26 March 1903.
In his later years when he was nearly eighty years old and living alone, he married Christena C. Guymon, we called her grandma Steanie.
He resided in Fountain Green until his death, 10 September 1917 at the age of eighty four years.
