Thomas Prence, 1633; on committee with the governor and assistants to revise the laws, 1636; deputy, 1643; deacon in the church; he was one of the founders of Nauset, now Eastham, Mass. 1644; which included anciently, Wellfleet, on the north, and Orleans on the south. The first settlers of Eastham were: Gov. Thomas Prence, Edward Bangs, John Smalley, John Doane, Nicholas Snow, Richard Higgins and Josias Cook, and their families, constituting a colony of forty nine persons. To each settler was granted 200 acres of land; the farm of John Doane is pointed out, north of the harbor; the site of his home is marked by a rough granite stone, placed there in recent times by his descendant, Hon. John Doane,7; deputy from Eastham, 1649-54; selectman, 1663-76; he d. Eastham, Feb. 21, 1686, and was buried in Town Cove burying ground.
