probably apprenticed and learned the trade of carpenter; it appearing in his
will that he was such; but in deeds he was called yeoman; m. 1646, Hope, dau.
of John and Elizabeth (Tilley) Howland, b. Plymouth, 1629; who d. Jan. 8, 1683;
m. 2d widow of Richard Bourne, of Sandwich, Mass., and dau. of William Sargeant,
b. Charleston, Mass., Oct. 25, 1642, who first m. Jonathan, son of Josiah Winslow,
of Marshfield, Mass. Elder Chipman was in Barnstable, 1649, and bought the homestead
of Edward Fitzrandolphe, bounded north by the county road, east by the Hyannis
road, west by the homestead of George Lewis, and south by the commo9ns, containing
eight acres. He probably removed to the Great Marshes, West Barnstable, about
1659; and bought from his brother-in-law, Lieut. John Howland in 1642, forty
five acres of land in Barnstable, bounded east by the lands of john Otis and
William Crocker, north by the marsh. His connection with the church was most
happy; his wife joined Aug. 7, 1650 and he Jan. 30, 1652-3. "Henry Cobb
and John Chipman were chosen and ordained ruling elders of the church and were
solemnly invested with office upon ye 14th day of April, Anno Dom. 1670;"
