He died on 6 Jul 1889 in Arizona, Nutrioso, Apache County. He was buried on 8 Jul 1889 in Arizona, St. John's, Apache. He was endowed on 30 Sep 1929. Early in 1857, Brigham Young called Samuel Jefferson Adair and Robert D. Covington as leaders of two companies of pioneers to settle in Washington, Washington County, Utah, and grow cotton. In 1861, a Scandinavian Company came to assist in the work. The town was named in honor of George Washington and was the County Seat from 1859 to 1863. A cotton factory was built to process the cotton grown in the Virgin River Valley, and the area became known as "Utah's Dixie."

Washington lies in a well watered valley on Millcreek about five miles northeast of St. George, the County Seat of Washington County. When John D. Lee explored what is now Washington in 1852, he wrote Brigham Young, saying, "There we can raise cotton, flax, hemp, grapes, figs, sweet potatoes and fruits of almost every kind." After the settlement of Santa Clara in 1854 by Jacob Hamblin and his associates, it was demonstrated that cotton would grow to maturity in this part of the Virgin Valley. And in line with Brigham Young's policy of making the church self-supporting, a company was called to settle on Millcreek primarily for the purpose of raising cotton. In the spring of 1857, fifty families under the leadership of Robert Dockery Covington, who had been an overseer on a cotton plantation in North Carolina, and Samuel Adair, were called to make a settlement to be named Washington. Cotton raising proved successful. President Brigham Young promoted the building of this Historic Cotton Factory at Washington, so that the people could process their own cotton. This imposing momument and marker was dedicated 24 July 1955, to a most important early Utah Industry. It is located in the town of Washington, a short distance from Highway 91.
