She was baptized into the LDS church on 4 Feb 1900 in the Jordan River, Utah LDS temple. Baptized by James A. Rowell. She died on 30 Apr 1981 in Utah, Murray, Salt Lake County, Murray City Cemetary. She was sealed to parents BIC. She was buried. Block 11 Lot 103 Grave 5 Grace Christina Mortensen was a very special lady, to me and all who knew her. No matter what the circumstance was, she was always very willing to help out. I remember a time when I needed a place to stay for a couple of weeks, not just me, but I also had a Malamute Husky puppy. I never even asked her if I could stay there, but she had heard that I was having a bit of trouble, so when she found out, she called me up, and told me to come and stay at her house, for as long as I needed to.
My brother and I stayed at her house often on weekends when we were young, she was very good to us. It was as if it was her job to take care of the world if they needed her. I was helping her do some cleaning one day, and I had run across a bunch of cancelled checks. I was in shock at how many checks there was made out to all the different charities of the world. Every month she sent them each a dollar. That does not seem like much now, but this was when I was 8 or 9 years old. Back then that was quite a bit of money. She sent to around 12 different charities, faithfully, every month. That was just the way she was, no matter how much money she had, every month she would pay her tithing faithfully, and the charities, plus give all of us great grandchildren money to spend how we wanted to.
I remember going with Virginia every Saturday afternoon to go pick up Kay Larsen to come back and play cards. Him and Mame, Ma and Gramps would all sit around and play Spit in the Ocean. I used to like to hang around and watch them play. They would never tell me to go out and play with the kids, (my cousins) after watching for awhile, they would let me play for a bit. They would deal me in, and let me win a whole bunch of change, then they'd send me on my way, loaded for bear. Or so I thought. I was actually winning about $2.00 or $3.00 in change. To an 8 year old, I was rich!!! It made me feel so important to be included in their time.
When Ma was getting really sick, I remember going over to Virginias, just a few days before she died. I got a call from my Grandmother, LaRue, that Ma was getting really bad. So I rushed over to the florist and got the biggest bouquet of bright, beautiful spring flowers that I could find. When I walked into the room with them, her face lit up. She knew I was in a very poor situation, so she told me, "You shouldn't be spending you're money on me honey" I told her, "Why not! You are very important to me". She told me that day that she was ready to die, letting me know that she had a full and wonderful life, and was ready to move on. I am very grateful for the time that I got to share with her, for this wonderful, beautiful, giving person had a great amount of impact on my life. Ma and Gramps, I will never forget you! Parents: Gustave Adolph BERGEN and Christina Anderson NILSON .

She was married to Evan Erastus MORTENSEN on 16 Oct 1915 in Utah, West Jordan, Salt Lake County. Children were: Virginia Bernice MORTENSEN, Artha LaRue MORTENSEN .

In 1889, Adolph Gustave became a citizen of the United States and changed his hame to Bergen from Bergenstone.

History of Gustave Adolph Bergen
By a Daughter, Charlotte B. G. Olsen

My father, Gustave A. Bergen was born March 11, 1852, in Copenhagen, Denmark. His father, John Bergen was born June 22, 1822, in Kullered, Kristianstad, Sweden. His mother, Caroline Peterson was born March 30, 1819. John and Caroline were married December 8, 1844.
When missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to the Bergen home, the gospel was accepted joyfully. And the family made quick preparations to go to Zion, in America. But a sad event occurred C the mother passed away, and the father was unable to leave to leave at that time. However grandfather sent his little nine-year-old boy with neighbors who were immigrating to Utah. On the journey to Liverpool, in 1861, from Copenhagen, little Adolph became separated from these people who were to look after him, and he never saw them again. For eight or nine weeks the company was on the ocean journey, and then the ship landed at New York.
The child was among strangers in a strange land. And when the passengers were directed to a station where they took passage for the west, it was supposed that young Adolph's parents were among them. At Florence, Nebraska, these converts were outfitted with ox teams, for the journey across the western plains. Little Gustave Adolph trudged along with other children, and when mealtime came, this hungry child stood around with them, and waited until the scant supply of food was handed out to the children by their mothers. And Adolph waited until these children shared their portions with him. Our Heavenly Father, only, knew of the feeling of this little boy making his way to Zion.
It seems that this L.D.S. Church emigration company reached Salt Lake Valley in the late summer of 1861. All was hurry and hustle, to care for the arrivals. Friends or relatives kindly shared their humble homes with the emigrants, but not with little Adolph. No one noticed him now. No one was there to welcome him nor to invite him to their home. He wandered about the streets, alone and homeless, in the dusk of evening. Darkness came on C the child could only creep into a packing-box, which lay beside a one-room store. The box was his bed, for his first night in the valley of the Great Salt Lake. When morning came, and it was discovered by someone that the child was without care, Bishop Wyler was notified. This kind man immediately came and took the child to the home of the Bishop. What a sorry sight Adolph was! He was ragged, dirty, covered with vermin, cold, hungry, and alone.
The Bishop's good wife quickly attended to the child's needsC food, a warm bath, clean clothing were provided for him at once. The clothing had to be bought, because Bishop Wyler had only daughters C two of them. The boy had to begin to learn the English language immediately, because the Wyler's were English. This he did, as well as many other tasks.
Adolph was set to grubbing brush nearby, at an early age. The poor boy was willing, and did his work well. It seems that a feeling of good will existed between his benefactors and the boy, because he remained with the Wyler's until he grew to manhood. Father might have been baptized in Denmark, before he left, but if so, the record he did not have. So, on the second of July, 1876, he was baptized by Robert Elwood and was confirmed by Elder Higgins. Father was about twenty-four years of age when he was married to Christena Nilsen Andersen, on October 16, 1876, in the old Endowment House, by President Daniel H. Wells. The couple moved to Jordan, where father did farming. They became the parents of eleven children, seven daughters and four sons. Father's joy was increased when his dear father, John Bergen, from whom he had been so long separated, made his way to Utah, to rejoin his son, and to partake of the blessings of the gospel, and the great blessings of affiliating with members of the Church, the leaders in Zion.
On September 10, 1898, father was called to fulfill a mission for the Church in the homeland of his father's people, in Stockholm, Sweden. He returned after an honorable release, on November 30, 1900. While on his mission, a daughter was born to his wife. Father and Mother named her Hazel.
Father was ordained High Priest December 26, 1909. He passed away January 25, 1917, and was buried January 29, 1917 at West Jordan.
As the granddaughter of John Bergen, from Sweden, I am thankful for my heritage. He and my father left a numerous posterity, and a noble record as kind husbands and parents. They were true to their faith.
