Wiccan Traditions

Gardnerian Wicca: Gerald Gardner, a man to whom many name as the father of Wicca, went public about his involvement. This was after the witchcraft laws in England were repealed, in the 1950's. He changed the rituals to the coven to which he was a member. Gardnerian covens work skyclad(nude), they follow a degree system. One can only be initiated by the coven, they do not acknowledge initiation by self study.

Alexandrian: Founded in England, by Alex Sander in the 1960's, he calls himself the "King of his Witches". Many rituals are similar to the Gardnerian tradition, however, heavy on ceremonial magick, practioners work skyclad.

Seax-Wica: Raynond Buckland (protege to Gerald Gardner) in 1962, came to the United States and founded this tradition. He is credited with bring modern day wicca to America. Teaching the Gardnerian wicca, he noticed issue that he wished to adjust.  In 1973, Seax-Wica was born, were covens could decide whether to work skyclad or robed. Also, practioners can be intitiated by coven or self-study.

British Tradition: Many follow Janet and Stewart Farrar, they have a more structured atmosphere. Follow a degree system, their ways are  similar to both Celtic/Gardnerian.

Pictish: Nature based Scottish (solitary) Tradition. Dealing more with healing magick than religion. Vast knowledge of herbs.

Dianic Tradition: The Goddess aspects are worked with more, with little focus on the God. Since the 70's this has been seen as the more feminist tradition. There are many aspects to this tradition, for example some covens are women only.

Solitaire: Practices a tradition of their choosing or no tradition at all. The solitaire witch teaches themselves the craft either through books or finding a teacher. However, the choose to work alone, not connected to a coven. These may be lonely, however, groups of solitaires may come together to celebrate Sabbats. Or as a support group.

Eclectic Witches: Use techniques from whatever tradition or pantheons that suit their purposes. Yo can be an Eclectic solitaire or coven.

Hereditary Witches: These are witches taught the craft from a living relative. In some cases, the relative will adopt a person to carry on the family traditions.
