This article is the first in a series of, hopefully, many technical ideas, and innovations that Monster Motorsports would like to share with its readers. The inspiration from this article came from Victor Lapy, who, at first was interested in the picture of my F355 body. Upon hearing about my queries about whether he'd like to see a feature on the wing, he responded positively, hence this article.
The stock wing that the HPI Ferrari F355 body, in my opinion, was a wierd shaped thing. It made an already naturally understeering chassis (the RS4, with which the F355 came with), even worse. This was because the wing began almost flat at the leading edge, and started a constant arc bend so that it ended up nearly vertical at the trailing edge. Not a good thing. So I examined the wing a little, and came to the conclusion that, with the help of the provided side air dams, a dual-element, adjustable wing could be made from the original lexan pieces, no extra material required!
OK, first thing you need to do, assuming you have already dismantled the HPI wing, is to cut the wing itself. What you will need to do is to cut the wing, right across its width, at a point just behind the "dimple" where you mount the wing against the body. If this is unclear, look at the following pictures carefully.
The blue lines you see above indicate the lines that your cut out wing is supposed to conform to. Duplicate on the other side.
This is how the side plates look from the side. The arrows indicate where you should drill 2mm holes to fit the screws in. Do corresponding holes for the wing element. For the second-from-top hole, extend it into a slot so that the wing angle can be adjusted by loosening the topmost two screws and tilting it. If you are starting from scratch, mark corresponding points on both side of the unpainted lexan to facilitate accurate drilling. If the wing is already painted, just scratch the paint off as a marker.
Here is how the wing looks like: dual element, more aerodynamic, yet adjustable. If any of my instructions or descriptions are not clear, don't hesitate to email me.
