This Nissan Skyline competed in the 1991 Japan Grand Touring Car Championships. It carries the number 1 as it won the previous season's championship. Being extremely impressed by it's winning record in 1990, in which it, and another Skyline, dominated the whole championship. In the end, the Calsonic Skyline was victorious. Although Tamiya makes a 1991 version Calsonic Skyline, it was not immediately available to me, during which I had bought the Taisan Skyline (another JGTC competitor). I was going to paint it up as a normal road-going GTR when a race buddy of mine, Tan Wah Kum, gave me his unused Kyosho Calsonic Skyline decals. With all the materials ready, I was set to build a tribute to the Calsonic team's achievement. It was a simple matter of using the Tamiya window, and headlight trim, plus the Kyosho "Calsonic" and other sponsor lettering, to create a 1991 Calsonic Skyline. This car was featured in the Readers' Rides section of Radio Control Car Action.

I used Tamiya Polycarbonate Paints Brilliant Blue and White, as a backing coat. As you can see, the blue really is "brilliant". I only had slight problems with the front window sunshade decal strip that came from the Kyosho decal sheet, and didn't fit the Tamiya bodyshell's dimensions. Oh well. Nothing like a hair dryer and a finger to burnish the decal down. I used Tamiya's Castrol Celica rims because they seem to go with the car.
