Surnames were introduced to Britain in the 11th Century by the Normans and the origin of the name Robinson is pretty much as you would expect - The son of Robin - with Robin being a pet or diminutive form of the name Robert.

Coats of Arms belong to individuals who apply to a Herald's Office and are granted a design for their exclusive use only. The design does not belong to their family or any other person who happens to share the same surname. Bearing this in mind, illustrated at the top is what I supposed could be described as a "general" Robinson family Coat of Arms.

The ancient family motto in French is "Foi est tout" meaning "Faith is everything".
