The HINSON name is an example of an English Patronymic. I have found several spelling variations, including; Hinson, Hinsen, Hanson, Hansen, Henson, Hensen, Haeson, Haesen, Henne, Hinne, Henn, Hen, Henkin, Henken, Hinshaw, Henshaw, Hinsey, Hensey, Hinston, Hensten, and Hynson. There are probably others. If you know of one, let me know.

I have found three possible meanings of the Hinson name:

1. Hansen is a Flemish and Dutch version of the German surname Hans, a medieval given name that was actually an aphetic form of Johannes (John). Hansen, Henson , and Haesen are patronymic forms of the name (meaning 'son of Hans') found among the Flemish and the Dutch. Hans was a popular name and variations and cognates are found in several languages and dialects.

2. Henson is an English patronymic name derived from the Middle English given name Henne, which was a shortened form of Henry. Henn is the surname commonly associated with the name, with Henson as a patronymic form. Henkin is a diminutive form.

3. Hinson is derived from a now-unknown medieval first name such as the Old English first names H(amy)nci or Hynca, which are derived from the Old English word 'hun,' meaning bear cub. (Chester &Robb, p.312) English variations: Henshaw, Hinshaw, Hinsey
