The surname "Alexis" seems to have come from many different ethnic backgrounds. As an example, the name Johan Alexis, was given in the Swedish army in the mid-1800's. At the time, Swedes used Patronymic surnames.. i.e. the father's last name plus the suffix "son" for sons and "dotter" for daughters. Unfortunately, this tends to makes certain surnames extremely common. In the Swedish army, each village was required to supply so many men, and each had to have a unique last name. Therefore, new surnames were assigned to those whose last name had already been used.
