Monaco 3-1 Real Madrid
6 april 2004
Aggregate score: 5-5
Monaco go through on away goals
Monaco launched a stunning second-half comeback to knock out Real Madrid and book a semi-final against Chelsea. Real looked on course when they stretched their aggregate lead to 5-2 with a superb strike from Raul. But Ludivic Giuly's low volley gave Monaco hope before half-time and on-loan Real striker Fernando Morientes made it 2-1 on the night with a header.
Giuly's clever backheel put Monaco's fans in dreamland and though Raul twice went close, the French side held on. There was little sign of the drama to follow in a sedate opening spell. With Real happy to protect their lead, Monaco had plenty of possession but they lacked urgency on the attack. It took almost 30 minutes for the hosts to come alive.
KEY MOMENTS
35 mins: Raul puts Real ahead
45 mins: Guily hits back for Monaco
48 mins: Morientes gives Monaco real hope
66 mins: Giuly puts Monaco ahead on away goals
Morientes forced Iker Casillas into an athletic save with a venomous strike from a free-kick. Monaco's fans responded and Real's nerves were clearly rattling when Ivan Helguera brought down the marauding Patrice Evra on the left wing and received the first booking of the game. But just as Monaco were looking the more likely scorers, the visitors struck through Raul. Ronaldo went on an incisive run through the left channel and passed across the edge of the box where Guti's clever dummy left Raul in space to guide the ball home.
The goal took Raul past Ferenc Puskas on the all-time scorers list for Real, and should have put the Spanish champions in complete control. But Monaco responded before half-time when Evra's cross fell kindly for Giuly and he fired a low volley into the corner. Within minutes of the start of the second-half, Monaco were suddenly sensing an upset which had looked so unlikely at the beginning of the evening. his body.

Evra was again involved, his long cross floated towards Morientes who beat Helguera and sent a looping header beyond the grasp of Casillas. With Giuly frantically urging his team-mates on, Monaco kept surging forwards and it was the Monaco skipper who put his side ahead on away goals. Subsitute Shabani Nonda fired in a cross which Giuly brilliantly back-heeled through Carlos' legs and past Casillas.
Real were forced into some desperate action and thought they had re-established their lead, but Raul's header was disallowed for offside. After 65 minutes, Raul should have put the visitors back in control but having been put through by Carlos, he sent his effort wide, leaving the Monaco fans breathing a sigh of relief. Nonda twice hit the bar for Monaco in a frantic end to a thrilling game, and Raul was again off target in the dying minutes but Monaco prevailed.

An extraordinary error by Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn gave Real Madrid a barely-deserved draw in the clash of the Champions League giants. Kahn somehow managed to allow a free-kick from Roberto Carlos to squeeze under his body.

That cancelled out Roy Makaay's 76th-minute header which had seemed certain to give the German side a deserved win. Munich fashioned all the best chances, with Owen Hargreaves and Claudio Pizarro both going close.
Munich set the scene early on with an incisive attack, which only ended when Roberto Carlos sliced a clearance inches wide of his own goal. The home side defended well against the visitors' occasional threat, and Pizarro should have given them a 14th-minute lead, blazing over from eight yards with the Madrid defence in disarray.
Michael Ballack was denied by a last-ditch tackle by Roberto Carlos as Munich's confidence grew. Ze Roberto saw a shot saved at full stretch by Casillas, who pounced on the rebound seconds before Ballack could follow up.
The German was booked on 25 minutes for a wild lunge at David Beckham, but it was Madrid who looked rattled. Munich put serious pressure on Madrid in all areas of the park, forcing the Spanish team to give away possession in alarmingly regular fashion.
Hargreaves was denied on 35 minutes when his powerful low drive from 20 yards was well stopped by Casillas. Yet the Spanish team almost nicked a goal, against the run of play, on the stroke of half-time as Ronaldo fired in a low shot which brought the first save of note from Kahn. Madrid still looked disjointed at the start of the second half, yet Beckham nearly gave them the lead on 51 minutes, curling a shot inches over the bar after a cleverly worked corner.
But Munich should have opened the scoring, Makaay missing a golden chance, as he headed wide after an inch-perfect cross form the left by Ze Roberto. Munich were becoming frustrated at their inability to turn chances into goals, and Madrid frustrated at the way their hosts were stifling their game. Tempers began to fray on both sides, but Munich retained their control of the match, with further half-chances for Pizarro and substitute Hasan Salihamidzic. And they grabbed their reward as Makaay headed home emphatically from Pizarro's pinpoint cross on 76 minutes.
But there was a further twist as Madrid grabbed a barely-deserved lifeline with just seven minutes remaining. It was an extraordinary blunder by Kahn, who allowed a long-range Roberto Carlos free-kick to squeeze under his body and into the net.
But the draw - the first time Madrid have avoided defeat at the Olympic Stadium - makes the Spanish side hot favourites to progress to the quarter-finals.
